RG Day Eight: Robin & Rafa React

Posted by gauloises1 on May 31, 2009

It may have escaped your notice, my eagle-eyed readers, but I’m actually not a Rafa fan. Still, he gave a masterclass today in how to accept defeat with calmness, grace and maturity.

rafa presser

From Nadal’s presser:

Q. It was a great four year winning period. All things had to end, and it happened today, your series of wins. Did you expect such power tennis from Soderling before the game? Were you surprised during the match of the way he hit his ball consistently so hard, especially on the forehand, but also in general?

RAFAEL NADAL: No. No, no. He didn’t surprise me,because I know how he play, how dangerous he can be. Yesterday I didn’t play my best tennis. No, I didn’t attack in no one moment. I play very short, and I make him very easy to play at this level.

So when one player bad, must lose. That’s what happened today. I have to accept with the same calm when I win than when I lose. After four years I lose here, and the season continue.

Q. This defeat makes your victories even greater?

RAFAEL NADAL: No. No, defeats never make you grow, but you also realize how difficult what I achieved up until today was, and this is something you need sometimes. You need a defeat to give value to your victories.

I’m 22. Well, 23 in a couple of days. But unfortunately, it’s the first time I’m not going to celebrate my birthday in Roland Garros. I hope I’ll be able to celebrate more here and be back next year and try and win.

Kudos to you, Rafa.

soderling presser

And I imagine some Rafafans are already foaming at the mouth about some of what Soderling said – or so I gather on twitter – but actually, I thought he came across pretty well here:

Q. When did you really feel that you could win this match? Already in the first set or in the third? And also, Nadal just said here that he made it easier for you. Do you think you agree or think it’s the opposite, you maybe make things difficult forhim?

ROBIN SODERLING: I don’t know. You know, I try to keep telling myself before the match that, you know,I have to believe. Of course, I told everybody this is the biggest challenge you can have, I think, playing Nadal, the best clay court player of all times on clay, best of five sets in Roland Garros.

But still, you know, Ihave to believe that I have a chance, otherwise there’s no meaning going on the court. I could just go home instead. I tried to keep telling myself that, you know, at least I have a small chance.

I can’t really. I mean, I played a great match. I played a great match. I think I played very good now for two weeks in a row, four good matches here. If he thinks he played bad, I mean, that’s his choice. I would never say something like that, but…

Q. Itlooked as if you were sent by a special mission from Sweden by Borg to protect his record. You could clarify us on that maybe?

ROBIN SODERLING: I’m expecting at least an SMS from him.

Gonzo Gives His All For His Fans

Posted by gauloises1 on May 31, 2009

I remember somebody who was in a position to know, or at least pretended to be, commenting once that Gonzo seemed to really enjoy interacting with his fans. Which is great, right?

But wait! It can lead to heartbreak, or at least ankle twisting:

Q. Could you tell us something about your injury, the circumstances? It was curious.

FERNANDO GONZÁLEZ: It was curious. Let’s call it curious. (laughter.)

I was signing autograph after one of the matches in Rome. They called me from the other side of the court, and I went like running after the match and twist my ankle.

I went back to the locker room because it was really painful. That’s how it happened.

Read the whole thing here. He also chats nicknames:

Q. I think your nickname is Mano de Piedra. Can you explain to us where that comes from?

FERNANDO GONZÁLEZ: I have many. I like more when they call me Fenya.

Q. Which means?

FERNANDO GONZÁLEZ: Fenya is like Fernando in Chile. It’s more close to the people. Mano de Piedra was a boxer from Panama.

When he hits with the right, it was a knockout, normally.

For me, maybe can be a knockout for the crowd, because sometimes they both go far away.

Oh Gonzo.

gonzo

Never change.

Kolya Gets Very Personal

Posted by gauloises1 on May 31, 2009

Check out the ‘Up Close and Personal’ with Kolya …

The highlight for me?

Who’s the nicest guy on tour?
They’re all really nice: Federer, Nadal. All of the guys in the top 100 are cool. But if you asked me which one was the best looking I’d say Feliciano Lopez. Everyone thinks he’s gorgeous, with his blue eyes and curly hair.

For some reason I thought Kolya would have better taste in men than that.

RG Day Eight: Kolya, Shazza Into QFs

Posted by gauloises1 on May 31, 2009

So while everyone was either watching the Rafa-Soderling match or trying to find their bearings in the strange and unfamiliar world they were left in afterwards, Kolya the Obscure was quietly going out his business.

His business in this case being destruction.

kolya

He beat Fernando Verdasco 62 62 64. I don’t care what anyone else says, that’s a beatdown, especially considering Kolya’s injury problems of late.

nando

*smiles beatifically*

Kolya gets Soderling next for his troubles.

And on the vaginal side, Maria Sharapova survived another topsy-turvy, three-set come-from-behind match, beating Li Na Na Li 64 06 64.

Apparently she had the trainer out towards the end, so I don’t know how much more she has left in her. But looking at what it means to her, I wouldn’t bet against her reaching the semis. Would you?

She’ll face Cibulkova next.

Bambi Breaks Serve, Miraculously Not Neck

Posted by gauloises1 on May 31, 2009

OK, I’m going video mad right now. Last one, I promise … But this is the most amazing point from La Monf’s match with Melzer.

Ridiculous diving get, typical nuts celebration, and a high five from Melzer (which in slo-mo looks somewhat sarcastic, although I’m sure it wasn’t intended to be) …

Soderling Cries With Joy

Posted by gauloises1 on May 31, 2009

Seriously, tennisfannetosphere? You hate this guy?

Robin Soderling for Roland Garros champ 2009!

(Kidding. Let’s not get carried away here.)

BTW, if anyone finds a non-dubbed version, I would love it. Which is not to spit in the face of Crys‘ generosity in finding this vid for me or anything.

A Little Late … But Marin's Adorable

Posted by gauloises1 on May 31, 2009

Just found this video from the Tennis Channel … Marin being interviewed about his career and his game on clay:

He’s so adorable! So serious and so hard-working and so … thoughtful. I want success for him, big time.

And I love the way he acknowledges the fact that he’s ridiculously skinny. Because let’s face it … the guy needs a sandwich. Or seven.

RG Day Eight: Azarenka Defeats Ana

Posted by gauloises1 on May 31, 2009

Victoria Azarenka defeated Ana Ivanovic in straight sets, 63 62.

aza

This wasn’t happy viewing, despite being an Azarenka rooter. Ana looked like she was about to cry from mid way through the first set on.

ana2

Her serve was a mess and she wasn’t dictating with her forehand when she got a chance to hit it. But most importantly, she didn’t look for one moment as if she believed she could win.

Azarenka on the other hand looked like she had no doubts that she was the better player, and so it proved. Her first Slam quarter-final! Big milestone for the teenager. I wonder if she can give Safina a run?

aza2

Go Vika.

RG Day Eight: Congratulations to Robin Soderling

Posted by gauloises1 on May 31, 2009

I didn’t say this before, but congratulations to Robin Soderling. Nadal wasn’t at his best – nowhere near – but Soderling played the match of his life. Of ANYONE’ S life.
