Madrid Results: Venus, Zheng, Tsonga Out

Posted by gauloises1 on May 13, 2009

So. I actually didn’t get to see a lot of today’s action, which is weird, given that a lot of today was spent in front of my laptop.

Regardless, the biggest story is that Venus Williams, the new world no. 3, was upset by Alisa Kleybanova.

Great win for Kleybanova, who upset Ana Ivanovic at the Australian Open.

All else was fairly without incident on the women’s side. Wozniacki won over Lepchenko, Safarova put out Great Britain’s Anne Keothavong (BOO! HISS! &c.), and in the battle of the qualifiers, Dushevina defeated the increasingly tough Vinci.

And oh yeah … JJ WON.

jj

Surviving a tough first set against Daniela Hantuchova to win 75, 62.

And who else …?

momo2

Yeah, Momo. That’s who. She beat fifteenth seed Zheng Jie Jie Zheng in straight sets, 62 75.

Singles – Second Round
(4) Jelena Jankovic (SRB) d. Daniela Hantuchova (SVK) 75 62
(9) Caroline Wozniacki (DEN) d. (Q) Varvara Lepchenko (USA) 63 61
Amélie Mauresmo (FRA) d. (15) Zheng Jie (CHN) 62 75
Agnes Szavay (HUN) d. (Q) Aravane Rezai (FRA) 26 75 62
Francesca Schiavone (ITA) d. Petra Kvitova (CZE) 64 62
Lucie Safarova (CZE) d. Anne Keothavong (GBR) 61 75
(Q) Vera Dushevina (RUS) d. (Q) Roberta Vinci (ITA) 46 61 64

Doubles – Second Round
(1) Black/Huber (ZIM/USA) d. Mattek-Sands/Petrova (USA/RUS) 36 64 104
Hsieh/Husarova (TPE/SVK) d. Jans/Rosolska (POL/POL) 63 36 106
Azarenka/Vesnina (BLR/RUS) d. Kudryavtseva/Makarova (RUS/RUS) 61 61

Doubles – First Round
(WC) Safina/Szavay (RUS/HUN) d. (WC) Domínguez Lino/Parra Santonja (ESP/ESP) 60 62

On the penile side, all proceeded as expected.

Murray survived a tough challenge from Simone Bolelli, although not without being a bit of a drama queen (of course) and Fed won (OF COURSE). In disappointing news, Fernando Verdasco – he of the name bolded, italicised and triple-underlined on the hate list – beat Juan Carlos Ferrero (he of the definitely not). Boo.

And there was another blow to all aficionados of the hot, as Jo-Wilfried Tsonga was shown the door by the inexplicably still relevant Ivan Ljubicic.

Dirty. DIRTY BOY.

But in much happier news, Kolya beat Troicki in straight sets and Barbie’s dream tennis player, Fabio Fognini, recorded a win over Paul-Henri Mathieu after the latter retired with what is simply recorded as “throat”. What? And Marin won. Somewhat inexcusably in three, but we’ll forgive him.

And in fucking weird bizarro alternate universe results, Juan Martin del Potro and Mardy Fish won their doubles match. WHY? This upsets me. I like Elf’s socks. ELF NEEDS HIS SOCKS.

I have a terrible mental picture of Elf with hiked up shorts and no socks.

Still can’t get over that doubles pairing…I’d love to know, how did it happen? I mean, I’d expect Elf to pair up with another Spanish speaker, not Mr. Rice-a-roni.
