Montreal: The And-gony and the Elf-cstasy
Posted by gauloises1 on August 16, 2009
(I do apologise, I’ve been pouring whiskey into my coke since the end of the first set.)
Juan Martin del Potro d. Andy Roddick 46 62 75

Huge win for JMDP; his first Masters series final.

Heartbreaking loss for Roddick. Again.
One shambolic service game in the first set, total domination in the second set. JMDP had a break point early in the third and failed to convert. He went match-point down at 4-5 and missed his first serve, only for Roddick to put the return wide.
And then I don’t know quite what happened. JMDP maintained his level and Roddick simply fell apart in the next game, eventually double-faulting away the break. It seemed there was almost no chance that JMDP wouldn’t serve it out, and he did.
I was impressed beyond measure by JMDP’s performance in the final set. He went for his shots relentlessly even when he missed. His self-belief is through the roof right now and if you ask me (which you didn’t), he’s playing the tennis of his life so far.

All this and he still has time to make ridiculous faces …

those first four games of the second set of the semi should make murray run for cover under his tennis match dvd collection. when elf is in the zone like that, can anyone beat him? elf’s serve is bouncing so high they might have to come up with a new name for this serve. i feel like he’s improved a handful since last sunday.
besides murray, does any other player have two coaches scouting matches for them? does lta pay for his coaching? i don’t think i have ever seen that before.
what tennis players past and present are you tennis lovers/new balls readers fans of?

I’m sad for Andy, but well done by Del Po. I give him the edge over Muzz in the final.

So happy to return home to this news! I immediately checked the score — we just started watching right now (and JJ is actually watching it without knowing the score — I felt the need to brace myself if Elf lost). Vamos Crazy Elf! I’m so thrilled he made his first Master’s Final — and I can’t wait to watch the match with Murray tomorrow.

The sexalicious part goes without saying, IRTTY.
Happy – I don’t believe that the LTA plays for either Maclagan or Corretja. I could be wrong, but I’d be pretty surprised to find out that I was. I was surprised to see Corretja with the team once again, as I thought he was only hired for the clay court season – and there were reports in the media that he and Murray weren’t speaking by the end of Roland Garros.
