Bilbao Baggins

Juan Carlos Ferrero had a good week, defeating Guillermo Olaso (replacing Albert Montanes), Tommy Robredo and Nicolas Almagro to win the Masters exhibition tournament in Bilbao. Which is apparently Spanish for ‘bad hat’.

No, I don’t know.
He was also on hand to present bromancer-in-arms and Davis Cup hero David Ferrer with a golden medal for sporting merit in recognition, presumably, of his general awesomeness.

Men in love suits.

It’s not a faux-beret, it’s THE beret. What we know as a French type of cap is actually a Basque cap (Bilbao is in the Spanish part of the Basque Country; there’s of course also the French part of it).
There’s a tradition of Basque rural sports (wood chopping, stone lifting, bale tossing etc.). Winners receive a Basque beret (txapela) as a trophy, hence the Basque word for “champion”, txapeldun, literally “one who has a beret”.

Back in the days when Roddick won the USO, JC seemed to be sharp-faced arrogant git with the world’s worst bleached ‘highlights’. But now… just look at him. Lovely in every way.
ps – Ferru has always been lovely.
pps – wished you had cropped Almagro out of that first pic.
