So this Europe/Africas round robin in Lisbon business is confusing the hell out of me. But I do know that after getting off to a great start against Bosnia, Team GB slumped to defeat against Austria and now have to face Belarus. So that will probably go well.
The good/bad news, depending on your perspective, is that Victoria Azarenka was benched today after being forced to retire against Sybille Bammer on day one. Wozniacki is also reportedly suffering from health problems. And in more woe for the younger generation, Larcher de Brito was trounced by Patty Schnyder.
I demand a training montage.
Full scores here if you can make head or tail of them …
We are also looking forward to the weekend’s World Group and World Group II ties, and although Russia-Serbia has a certain appeal …
… it’s Poland vs. Belgium in the second-tier World Group that I’d want to see.
What a very recognisable Belgian team.
Bring it.
I almost certainly won’t get a chance to preview the ties properly, but here’s what’s going on:
World Group
Ukraine v Italy
Kharkiv, Ukraine
Czech Republic v Germany
Brno, Czech Republic
Serbia v Russia
Belgrade, Serbia
France v USA
Lievin, France
World Group II
Australia v Spain
Adelaide, Australia
Poland v Belgium
Bydgoszcz, Poland
Estonia v Argentina
Tallinn, Estonia
Slovak Republic v China
Bratislava, Slovak Republic

so, correct me if I’m wrong, but if Austria defeats Bosnia-Herzegovina (which has yet to win a match) then Austria goes through to the playoffs and Belarus and Britain both languish in Europe-Africa for another year, regardless of who wins their faceoff? lame.

That’s how I understand it, not that that’s saying much. Not who I expected to come out of that group.

I think Ana will get her first top 10 win in over 15 months against Kuzz today. If she does, I think Serbia will win this tie. I hope I didn’t jinx her by writing this.
