After beating expert clay-courter and Fed Cup heroine Flavia Pennetta 61 61 in the first round, Victoria Azarenka then lost 63 63 to Anna Lapushchenkova, a player who even obsessive tennis fans have generally never heard of.
There is basically no excuse.

Dinara Safina played her first match today since the Australian Open, a 76(5) 36 60 victory over Agnes Szavay.

Seems like old times …

We lost Andy Murray today to David Ferrer, who ended the Tim’s sudden resurgence as an actual tennis player in two sets, 63 64. Sad … but at least he looked vaguely like himself again in this tournament. The losses in Indian Wells and Miami simply do not compare. There’s some hope.
Congratulations to Ferru though on a rare big scalp. That loss in Barcelona had to be agonising, but he did what he does and kept on keeping on. If there’s a greater argument for what heart, determination and stamina can achieve in the modern game than David Ferrer, I don’t want to know about.

Well, perhaps I do, but only so that I can be suitably impressed.

So, you’re in Rome. And you’ve already lost. As a result, you’ve got a bit of time on your hands. What do you do? What any red-blooded young man worth his salt would do. You go to see this guy.

Andreas Seppi, Jeremy Chardy and Leander Paes popped along to visit with God for a bit, not having anything more pressing to do.

They even took their girlfriends along. Because nothing’s more romantic than an audience with Benedict XVI.

Wow. Give it up for Li Na, who defeated defending champion Svetlana Kuznetsova, and Shahar Peer, who took out Agnieszka Radwanska in Stuttgart today.

In other news, JJ had a routine win and Victoria Azarenka beat Flavia Pennetta 61 64. Not sure what’s the biggest upset there.

Routine day in Rome today. Even the upsets were a bit predictable. As Drew Lilley called it, Lopez and Wawrinka both scored victories in three sets over Marin Cilic and Tomas Berdych respectively.

It happens.
Lopez’s quarter of the draw is now missing the top two seeds; Wawrinka isn’t so lucky, because he’s uncomfortably adjacent to Robin Soderling, a straight sets victor today, and this guy. Ditto.

Elsewhere Nose Job had an excellent win over fourteenth seed John Isner, and Filippo Volandri continues his quest to prove he’s relevant in the world by beating Benneteau to make the third round.

Did you have hope? You’re going to want to stop that. James LaRosa is reporting via twitter that Delpo probably won’t be able to play Madrid and that Roland Garros is highly doubtful.
I’m not saying it’s true, although it probably is. I’m not even saying that the fact that he can’t practice properly without needing to cross borders to get a(nother) specialist medical consultation is any reason to despair. I’m just saying – there was an Elf. And now there isn’t.

That is all.

Roger and Raf a took part in the inauguration ceremony for the new centre court in Rome today, and at least one of them was rocking some very unfortunate hair:

Meh. Give me dressed-down, chilled-out, Nole-bromancing Rafa any day.

While Murray stunned the nation by winning a match and some other guy lost, Novak Djokovic’s crushing win over Jeremy Chardy went somewhat unnoticed, but win he did, 61 61. In encouraging news, his serve looked particularly good.

Juan Monaco, meanwhile, suffered another disappointing defeat, going down in straights to Victor Hanescu. I don’t know how much the wrist is bothering him, but his results certainly don’t seem to justify postponing the surgery.

Obligatory disbelieving look over the net.
I’ll bet that some martyred, long-suffering pleading with the umpire was involved as well.
The unseeded Wawrinka and Lopez both had thorough straight sets wins and were apparently looking very good, while Nose Job prevailed over Horseface and Lleyton Hewitt had a tough win over Mikhail Youzhny in three.

David Ferrer beat Evgeny Korolev to face Andy Murray in the second round, and last week’s girl Thiemo de Bakker was forced to retire in the third set against Viktor Troicki.
