Rome: It Was Fun While It Lasted
Posted by gauloises1 on April 30, 2010
We lost Andy Murray today to David Ferrer, who ended the Tim’s sudden resurgence as an actual tennis player in two sets, 63 64. Sad … but at least he looked vaguely like himself again in this tournament. The losses in Indian Wells and Miami simply do not compare. There’s some hope.
Congratulations to Ferru though on a rare big scalp. That loss in Barcelona had to be agonising, but he did what he does and kept on keeping on. If there’s a greater argument for what heart, determination and stamina can achieve in the modern game than David Ferrer, I don’t want to know about.

Well, perhaps I do, but only so that I can be suitably impressed.

I’m not sure Muzz on clay is that big a scalp. Ferru’s been playing well, and Andy, well not so much of late unfortunately. IMO this was the expected result on the red stuff.

Hmmm. I think if you’ve got Ferrer’s record then a win against one of the top five is a big scalp regardless of surface or form. I don’t think it’s an upset, but I do think it’s a nice win that should be recognised.
Plus I was really drink. And bitter. So I probably erred on the side of generosity somewhere.

I completely agree with you, Gauloises. I told JJ before the match that Ferru SHOULD win, but it wouldn’t surprise me at all if he didn’t because he has such a complex against top players — poor Ferru and his thoughts that everyone else has so much more talent than he does. So I was thrilled with this result (sorry, I know you wanted Murray to win, but Ferru is in my top 5 of favorites).

See? AmyLu agrees with me
I would have liked Murray to win, but it was never going to happen. I had no hope and therefore am not particularly disappointed.

Agree with Neil but am encouraged by Murray playing decently.
Agree about Ferru too.

This bit of the “we” equation lost nothing. “we” gained more time to look at Ferru belly and his charming towel biting. Alas he shall be back to his ankle grabbing ways very shortly… and not in any fun way. Hey Ho.

Well, he was there and now he’s not, so yeah, we did lose him.
I really shouldn’t blog when I’m drunk, this is becoming increasingly clear from the comments on this post. Fine! That means approximately 80% less blogging. I hope you’re happy.

Glass half full is all I was trying to say… or in your case… drained and refilled.
