WTA Week Now: Madrid

Draw here.
Top Seeds: Serena Williams, Caroline Wozniacki, Dinara Safina, Venus Williams, Svetlana Kuznetsova, Elena Dementieva, Jelena Jankovic, Samantha Stosur
Notable absences: Kim Clijsters (foot), Yanina Wickmayer (elbow surgery)
First-round matches to watch: Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova-Daniela Hantuchova, Maria Sharapova-Lucie Safarova, Justine Henin-Aravane Rezai, Sorana Cirstea-Flavia Pennetta, Samantha Stosur-Gisela Dulko, Agnieszka Radwanska-Maria Kirilenko
Yep, this shit is going to be bananas. In fact, it already slightly is. Fifth seed Svetlana Kuznetsova lost to Shahar Peer in three sets (including a bagel), Elena Dementieva dropped just one game against Aleksandra Wozniak, and Andrea Petkovic beat Sara Errani (who I have been talking up recently, so that’s probably why) 75 in the third. Oh, and Vera Zvonareva won a match in straights. Against Melanie Oudin.
Buckle up.

Waaaait, how did FF manage to get a bye?
AmyLu said
It’s because she made the semis in Rome — I’m not really sure how the policy is written, but I just know it’s something that’s part of the roadmap.
Jenni said
Thanks. That’s just stupid, imo, but I’ve hated the roadmap ever since Vera blew out her ankle in Charleston.

Aaah, Dina with a trophy…how I miss those days!
My biggest question going into Madrid is how they are going to follow-up the confetti popping moment from last year, because that was a pretty epic moment.
CanWoz seems to be in a bit of a slump, isn’t she? I’m not going to pretend like I’ve been paying that much attention, but I recall a lot of early, lopsided defeats- and not really much winning at all.
Also, I’m really disappointed by Sveta’s play- not trying to jurge her or anything, but really, what is going on?
Sheesh, I have no clue what is going to happen in Madrid in ATP or WTA- it’s all one big question mark right now. Alona Bondarenko and Phillip Kohlschrieber: Madrid Champions- anyone?
