WTA Wednesday: Semifinals Set

Posted by gauloises1 on January 13, 2010

And on we go. As aforementioned, Aravane Rezai is the sole unseeded player in the semifinals lineup, crushing Flavia Pennetta 63 60. Her reward? A meeting with Serena Williams, who disposed of Vera Dushevina 62 62.

Without even standing up.

In the bottom half of the draw, Elena Dementieva is in with an excellent chance of defending her title, defeating Dinara Safina 62 63.

She’ll face sixth seed Victoria Azarenka, who played her third three-set match (out of three) against resurgent Dominika Cibulkova, eventually triumphing 75 in the third.

Fasten your seatbelts; 2010’s going to be a bumpy ride.

In Hobart, qualifier Kirsten Flipkens is quietly doing her part for the Belgian resurgence, reaching the quarterfinals after disposing of sixth seed Aleksandra Wozniak, while third seed Kateryna Bondarenko fell to Sara Errani. And hometown hopes Alicia Molik and Jelena Dokic fell to Carla Suarez Navarro and a ruthless Shahar Peer.

Great to see Shahar back on song after all the crap she’s had to put up with of late, isn’t it?

Black and Gold

Posted by gauloises1 on January 13, 2010

Aravane Rezai is having a great start to the season, building on her Bali triumph by reaching the semifinals of Sydney. But that’s not why she’s getting her own post.

This is.

What Happened So Far

Posted by gauloises1 on January 12, 2010

So, I’ve been a little bit out of the loop since Sunday. What’s been going on?

Auckland

David Nalbandian pulled out with an abominal injury that may keep him out of the Australian Open.

Leaving many of us feeling like this.

But hey, Pico’s back! As is Nose Job.

Possibly having had another nose job.

Hobart

Alicia Molik keeps on keeping on, beating Sania Mirza; Carla Suarez Navarro next.

Zheng Jie beat Peng Shuai.

Jelena Dokic beat a Tim.

And Alize Cornet continues determinedly divesting herself of what remains of her points.

Sydney

JJ’s back!

She lost.

So did Caro.

So did Svetlana.

But hey, Dominika Cibulkova’s back!

So is Victoria Azarenka. In the really … Victoria Azarenka sense. She’s struggled through two three-setters so far, one against Sabine Lisicki and one against, um, Kimiko Date Krumm.

Hey, remember her? She won a match! In straight sets, too.

So did she. It may or may not be on.

The men have been boring. Have a photo of Baggy anyway.

This concludes your round-up.

WTA Week Ahead: Hobart, Sydney

Posted by gauloises1 on January 10, 2010

Hobart

Draw here.

With defending champion Petra Kvitova having just lost in qualifying to Kirsten Flipkens, the top four seeds are Anabel Medina Garrigues, Shahar Peer and a couple of Bondarenkos. In the top quarter, Medina Garrigues and Gisela Dulko both have tough openers against Iveta Benesova and Melinda Czink respectively, and I’d look for Benesova or Dulko to come out here. The second quarter is anchored by Alona Bondarenko and Zheng Jie and there’s a brace of question marks here, including Alize Cornet, bizarrely-dangerous Sybille Bammer, Sorana Cirstea and Kaia Kanepi. This is anyone’s quarter.

In the bottom half of the draw, the ‘tough matches for seeds’ theme continues, with Aleksandra Wozniak meeting Magdalena Rybarikova and Kateryna Bondarenko drawing the inconsistent Lucie Safarova. And the bottom quarter has kind of a wildcard theme, with home favourites Alicia Molik and Olivia Rogowska dropped in along with Jelena Dokic and Yaroslava Shvedova. Basically, it’s a bloody good draw and I have no idea who’s going to win.

Sydney

Draw here.

This is where the big guns are coming out to play, with Serena, Safina, Wozniacki, Dementieva, Kuznetsova, Jankovic, Azarenka and (at the time of writing) Zvonareva all in the draw. The draw is so loaded, and so many players’ form is so unknown, I can’t even pretend to call it. Go everyone.

First-round matches to watch out for: Zvonareva-Vesnina, Wozniacki-Li Na, Stosur-Pennetta, Azarenka-Licky, Kleybanova-Kuznetsova, Dementieva-Schiavone … it’s good stuff.

Henin Out of Sydney, Zvonareva Doubtful

Posted by gauloises1 on January 10, 2010

Justine Henin has withdrawn from the Sydney Medibank International, citing a left gluteal strain. She was due to play Maria Jose Martinez Sanchez in the first round, with a possible meeting with Serena Williams in the second. So, probably a smart decision.

Vera Zvonareva is also doubtful after she was forced to skip a match against Victoria Azarenka at the Hong Kong Classic due to a recurrence of the ankle injury that plagued her in 2010, although she played a mixed doubles match later and hopes to be fit.

ATP Week Ahead: Auckland, Sydney

Posted by gauloises1 on January 9, 2010

Auckland

Draw here.

To my eyes, and despite the absence of del Potro, this is definitely the more interesting draw. Headlined by a quartet of Spaniards – Hopman Cup winner Robredo, Boss, Nicolas Almagro and Ferru – all eyes will be on the returning David Nalbandian, playing his first tournament since Barcelona 2009, who has been unlucky enough to draw Philipp Kohlschreiber in the first round, with the winner meeting either Thomaz Bellucci or Marco Chiudinelli in the second. Nothing like a nice, gentle return to the tour. While Boss’ quarter is relatively qualifier-packed and therefore should be smooth, Robredo has to contend with John Isner and the winner of an all-Argentine clash between Challenger machine Horacio Zeballos and Juan Monaco, while Almagro has Nalby and the aforementioneds in his quarter. Ferru, tucked in at the bottom, should have a relatively smooth ride unless Chardy or Jurgen Melzer can pull off a surprise. Ferru or Nalby to win – although that’s not so much a prediction as a heartfelt wish …

Sydney

Draw here.

With defending champion David Nalbandian not returning (apparently he didn’t get a wildcard), the top four seeds are Brisbane semifinalists Gael Monfils and Tomas Berdych, Chennai finalist Stanislas Wawrinka and, well, Lleyton Hewitt. Monfils has a possible third-round encounter with Richard Gasquet but otherwise looks pretty safe, as does Wawrinka. Rusty will have to contend with Troicki and Baggy in his quarter and probably Tomas Berdych in the semifinals. Winner definitely to come from the top half of the draw (unsubstantiated prediction #1) …
