Zverev in a Stichy Situation

Posted by gauloises1 on July 19, 2009

Apparently Michael Stich will be playing doubles with Mischa Zverev in Hamburg next week.

stichdrunk stich

Ethan Hawke’s really let himself go, eh?

At first I was annoyed about this, in a “go away, you’re old” sort of way. But then it occurred to me that it guarantees me at least one opportunity to make a Stich-related pun.

Lemons, lemonade. Or words to that effect having to do with sticks.

Spain 2 Germany 1

kiefer zverev2

Yep. Kiefer and Zverev were no match for the giggle twins. Verdasco and Lopez took the rubber 63 76(1) 67(6) 63. Which at least produced some mildly amusing photos, although with a distinct deja vu feeling about them.

If Argentina lose tomorrow (which they will) and this lot win (which they will), I am going to be pissed off. Which I will.

Wednesday Results: Queens, Halle

Posted by gauloises1 on June 10, 2009

I’m starting to feel like this week’s results really suck, and it’s only Wednesday. Sigh.

Queens

A double whammy for the organisers with the aforementioned withdrawal of Monfils and Safin. The fifth seed, Marin Cilic, also fell to qualifier Nicholas Mahut. Shouldn’t have tried to avoid saying hello to us after your doubles match yesterday, should you, Marin?

Karma is a bitch.

Luckily, great British hope Andy Murray and former champion Lleyton Hewitt both won, the latter setting up a clash with also-former champ Andy Roddick. And Juan Carlos Ferrero had a nice win over Paul-Henri Mathieu. Vamos the boss.

Oh – and the Bryan Brothers fell to a half-British team, Fleming and Skupski. C’mon Tim. I suppose.

Halle

Seeds fell on stony ground today in Halle. Stony ground with Germans growing in it. Wildcard Tommy Haas put out Tsonga, Kohlschreiber defeated Tursunov, Becker-not-that-one-the-other-one beat old man Schuettler, and Mischa Zverev saved two match points on his way to defeating Tomas Berdych.

Friday Results: Finalists Finalised

Posted by gauloises1 on May 23, 2009

Dusseldorf

I’ve given up trying to understand what’s happening here. All I know is that it involves a lot of happy Teutonic hugging.

kiefer mischa

And that it’s Germany vs. Serbia in the final tomorrow. Who needs Nole, eh?

pehkjanko

Admittedly tangential, but why do all Serbs seem to have such soft, shiny hair?

Singles Round Robin Matches
P Kohlschreiber (GER) d A Vinciguerra (SWE) 61 62
J Tipsarevic (SRB) d F Piccari (ITA) 62 63
*M Gonzalez (ARG) d E Korolev (RUS) 63 36 63

*M Gonzalez (ARG) replaced J Monaco (ARG) (left wrist)

Doubles Round Robin Matches
N Kiefer (GER) / M Zverev (GER) d R Lindstedt (SWE) / R Soderling (SWE) 76(4) 46 13-11 – Saved 1 M.P.

N Zimonjic (SRB) / V Troicki (SRB) d F Piccari (ITA) / A Seppi (ITA) 60 76(5)

Kitzbuhel

Little-known Armada tugboat Guillermo Garcia-Lopez upset Mikhail Youzhny to book a place in the final, where he’ll face the Queen of Spain (go with it) Julien Benneteau in a clash that tournament organisers are already billing as “… who?”

ggl

Singles – Semi-finals
G Garcia-Lopez (ESP) d [7] M Youzhny (RUS) 63 16 76(5)
[LL] J Benneteau (FRA) d O Hernandez (ESP) 63 64

- Saved 2 M.P.

Warsaw

Let’s hear it for plucky Romanian qualifier Alexandra Dulgheru! Her name might abbreviate to “dul”, but her game certainly isn’t. Apparently, as she upset sixth seed and perpetual disappointment Daniela Hantuchova for a place in the final. She’ll face Alona Bondarenko, a finalist back in 2007, who knocked out Britland fave and all-round Tim Anne Keothavong in straight sets – on the same day that Keo drew Safina as a first round opponent at Roland Garros. Double trouble.

WARSAW OPEN 2009dulgheru

Strasbourg

Not a single seed remains in this tournament. “Strasbourg” is German for “clusterfuck”, you know. So it’s a Rezai-Hradecka final! Go girls.

Kitzbuhel, Dusseldorf Results: Stuff Happens

Posted by gauloises1 on May 18, 2009

Dusseldorf

team germany

Team Germany, the heroes of the day.

Local heroes Germany took a 2-1 lead over the U.S., last year’s champions Sweden are up 2-1 over France, Italy are 2-1 up over Russia … for god’s sake, can’t someone have a different score? Why are you people such sheep?

maximo g

Oh, and Argentina are 1-2 down (see what I did there? I gave it a different twist), because Maximo Gonzalez lost to Victor Troicki, and then Elf and Pico got beaten by Errol Flynn and some dude with tattoos. Which does not compute. How could such a hot team fail?!

Rome Results: Zverev? Really?

Posted by gauloises1 on May 1, 2009

I already covered the two really important matches of the day – the ones involving hot Argies – so I’ll just say (again) that it was a great win for Pico, and that the long wait for a good clay run for Marin goes on. As for Elf/Waws, what can I say? I despaired at several points before and during the match, but he got it done in the end. A great result for my man. Now go and lose to Nole with your head held high!

What else happened? Um – Nole absolutely rolled Robredo, Roger won, and in even less surprising news, Rafa breadsticked and then bagelled Soderling, who seized the opportunity to do his public image some good:

l3783459

Gonzo survived a dogfight with Melzer and made a new friend, or possibly enemy, depending on what you think he’s saying here:

gonzo

Although if Gonzo was whispering like that to me, it really wouldn’t matter what he was saying.

And Gilles Simon’s woes continue, as he managed to find the only person left in the draw more surprising than Pico and lose to him.

gilles-emo

Anyone who picked Mischa Zverev to reach the quarterfinals will be burned as a witch. This will be your only warning.
