Estoril, Munich, Belgrade Finals

Posted by gauloises1 on May 10, 2009

First up, congratulations to Yanine Wickmayer of Belgium (a.k.a. the Belgian Sharapova … apparently), who won her first WTA singles title in Estoril when she defeated Ekaterina Makarova 75 62.

She played a solid, focussed match and seeing someone get their first title is always lovely. Well done, Yanine.

Unfortunately rain messed up the rest of the day’s play in Estoril. The first ATP finalist is Albert Montanes, who beat Capdeville 3 and 4. The second semifinal was rained off with Blake a set down but a break up on Davydenko, so it’s all still to be decided.

In Munich, both semifinals went to 3 sets, but Youzhny and Berdych – somewhat predictably – managed it in the end over local wildcard and hitherto total unknown Brands, and Chardy respectively.

And at the Nole Open, all our worst fears have come true.

NB: All the above was crafted while massively drunk and is probably not true.

I’m pretty sure you can stick their head in a jukebox too, unless Shaun of the Dead has crucially misled me.

If Nole doesn’t win today, I’ll eat my hat. While Kubot eats his brains.

Poor WickyWhackyWoo looks pretty upset at being only given a bottle of the local spumante to celebrate with. That stuff is rot gut.

how is kubot a zombie????…….cos i’m worried if he is a zombie for my sexATPers….and what if he goes to madrid?!!!!!!…..*protects JJ*

fire is the only way to defeat a zombie ( i think tho even if wrong, it’d be a remarkable sight). So does Nole take the prize money AND tournament profits, or does he fall on his sword and give Kubot ( Kubot-Robot???? hmmmm), the donation of a lifetime?

I just came back from Belgrade last night. And the name Nole open is the most appropriate. He was everywhere around the complex, huge pics of him over every possible wall, the aqua Novak logo on everything, the HEAD commercials on all the screens… But outside the complex HUGE marketing FAIL! No bilboards, no posters, no signs how to get to the site… And there weren’t even the usual bilboards, like Janko voli Milicu… The only bilboards of tennis players I saw were JJ’s Orbit and Anta and Rafa’s Nike!

  7. […] last year we also had a maiden titlist in Estoril who nobody had ever really heard of. Her name? Yanina Wickmayer. I’m just […]
