WTA Madrid Results: Quarterfinals Day

Posted by gauloises1 on May 15, 2009

So we have our WTA semifinalists.

And …

They all said I was mad when I predicted Momo making the semifinals. But I showed them! And now for my race of atomic supermen to conquer the world.

I didn’t see Wozniacki vs. Dushevina but it doesn’t look thrilling, although this is a good result for the new top 10 player. Szavay played a fantastic first set, but Momo served better in the second and generally raised her level, and after a certain point, Szavay just fell away – her game completely disappeared. Mental exhaustion from the match against Azarenka more than anything, probably. Still, this was a great run for her.

Safina looked tired against Blonderenko, but managed to win without playing hugely well. As for Jankovic, I’m not sure what to say. Schnyder played well, and was as frustrating an opponent as she can be, but JJ simply wasn’t there. Far too many UFEs. As soon as she started playing like herself – hitting with purpose and not missing – she broke Schnyder at the beginning of the second set, but she simply couldn’t sustain it. Not fun to watch. But hopefully she can go and rest up and be ready for Roland Garros …
