WTA Madrid: We Have Our Finalists

Posted by gauloises1 on May 16, 2009

Caroline Wozniacki d. Amelie Mauresmo, 76(1) 63

woz

Yeah, this basically sucked.

Momo played a smart first set … right up until she served for it at 5-3, whereupon she promptly fell apart. Broken, took it to the tiebreak, lost that, and completely imploded. It was a full-scale Momo meltdown. Old school. All credit to Wozniacki though, who played a smart match and executed her tactics well. I *loathe* all that moonballing she does, and it hurts seeing her attempt backhand volleys, but she’s definitely one of the better readers of the game among the young players. I’d like to see her develop a touch more purpose – sometimes she doesn’t seem to know what to do with the balls she chases down – but this was a great win for her.

As for you, Momo …

You’re still my girl.

Dinara Safina d. Patty Schnyder, 64 62

Not too much to say about this one. Patty put up a good show in places, but couldn’t get anywhere near enough penetration on her groundstrokes to trouble Dinara – who lost her range in places, but kept getting it back. Good stuff.

So Dinara advances to her third straight final (fifth in 2009?) and Patty has more time to work on her book. Everybody wins!

Go Dinara – davai for tomorrow!

As for the other… I’m bereft, bewildered, and bemoaning the cruel vagaries of life. I actually don’t think it was really a meltdown; even in the first set I felt like Amélie just never got it going in that match – apart from flashes of the brilliance we all love, she was flat the whole time, like she was exhausted or something. It just wasn’t right. Her body language was very negative a lot of the time and she just couldn’t seem to get all fired up.

    Good article at:

Still, some great stuff from her this week. Allez, hugs & shoulder rubs, and may she come back strong (and rested).
