Brits R Balls: Robson Returns, Ward Wins, RG Qualies

Posted by gauloises1 on May 19, 2009

After Keo’s win in Warsaw today, I thought it was probably time for another obligatory British tennis update.

laura robson

First up, Laura Robson is back. The British junior appears to have recovered from her leg injury, and today beat Malou Ejdesgaard 26 64 61 at a top-level junior event in Milan. Take it slowly, Laura. No rush.

Secondly, congratulations are due to James Ward, who won the Sarasota Challenger in Florida. That makes him the first British player since Henman (14 years ago) to win a challenger on clay.

james ward

People who are me will remember that James is the son of a London cabbie and once took a set off Marat Safin at Queens … Anyway, Ward’s ranking should go up to around 215 (pauses for astonished gasps – yes, the rankings go that low), which will make him eligible for a wildcard into Wimbledon, where he can get soundly beaten. It’s the way we do it.

But wait! … There’s a cute story:

It is hard to imagine Novak Djokovic offering Rafael Nadal a lift to a tournament in which they were about to meet in the semi-finals and then, as happened on Saturday, losing 7-6 in a heartbreaking final set before dropping him off back at his hotel. A couple of hundred steps down the ladder, though, and such unlikely incidents do occur.

Britain’s James Ward did not have transport to his match against American Michael Yani in Sarasota last Friday, Yani threw open the passenger door, took him to the court, Ward triumphed 7-5 in the deciding tie break, waited for his driver to play doubles, then hitched a ride home.

Nice stuff. James Ward for Heartwarming British Failure 2009!

In other news, there are three Brits into the main draw for the French Open – Murray, Keothavong, and Mel South – and five more competing in qualifying; Goodall, Bogdanovic, Katie O’Brien, Elena Baltacha and Georgie Stoop.

Serious question. I keep hearing about Georgie Stoop, but has anyone ever actually SEEN her?

Also, don’t forget that Elena “Comin’ Atcha” Baltacha just made the semis of the prestigious Fukouka 50K tourney in Japan (note: might not be prestigious).

I love Ward’s wry smile in that pic – like he’s just heard a delightfully dry Murray quip.

And I haven’t seen Georgie Stoops play, but her name sounds like something that should be in Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. Oompas Loompas need to be singing about her ASAP.
