RG Day Two: Five-and-Three Set Warriors

Posted by gauloises1 on May 25, 2009

So today’s Five Set Warrior award goes to Italian Simone Bolelli, who beat seeded Tomas Berdych in five sets, 64 64 57 46 63.

From what I saw, he was playing brilliantly and did really well to close out the win after Berdych battled his way back in to the match. Good man.

Not many men can play a killer forehand and proffer an invisible tray of canapes at one and the same time.

The following were disqualified on the basis of dislike/indifference/it being completely unncessary for them to go to five sets: Massu, Wawrinka, Machado and Lopez (who appears to have nicked my Elf’s trick of tucking up his shorts to receive. Yeah, I saw you.)

On the women’s side, I’m giving it to Marion Bartoli, who battled from first to last to subdue countrywoman Pauline Parmentier in three sets, 36 61 63. It was a match that was a lot tighter than the scoreline suggests. In fact, I’ve never seen Marion so desperate to win and so nervous – and that’s not just a function of the fact that she’s the most haunted-looking player on tour.

Clearly feeling the ‘French curse’ and facing an opponent who was playing the best I’ve ever seen her, Marion battled through. Go girl.

Really? More haunted-looking than Crazy-Patty-With-Spiders-Crawling-On-Her-House? (that’s her Navajo name, btw)

Hmmmm – I play Dr Walter and Rainer to a draw myself. With pistols. At noon.

Damm it – I didn’t reply right! *curses*
