RG Day Five: WTA Round-Up

Posted by gauloises1 on May 29, 2009

Disappointment for the home country as two of the remaining Frenchwomen in the draw went out today.

barts garbin

Thirteenth seed Marion Bartoli lost to Tathiana Garbin, and then Alize Cornet lost to Sorana Cirstea – which on the bright side, gave her a chance to display some of her classic facial expressions.

Luckily for les Bleus, Virginie Razzano made it through, notching up another good win over eighteenth seed Anabel Medina Garrigues 62 62. Sadly for the tournament and its upset-missingness, Jelena Dokic was forced to retire after straining her back when she was a set up on Elena Dementieva.

demmy dokic

Seriously, does that lady deserve some luck or what?

Serena Williams, Caroline Wozniacki and Svetlana Kuznetsova all made it through in straight sets. Kuznetsova’s performance was particularly devastating, although you wouldn’t know it from the photos.

And after yesterday’s shenanigans, so did Venus Williams, who bested Lucie Safarova 7-5 in the third. A tough loss for Lucie, but a great win for Venus.

Also through (deep breath): Martinez Sanchez, Jarmila Groth, Samantha Stosur, Agnieszka Radwanska, Dominguez Lino, Alexandra Wozniak and Kateryna Bondarenko.

Oh, and JJ and her hilarious hamster cheeks.

Pineapple-headed JJ FTW.

aaah Mirka is at that getting more and more gorgeous stage.. she was so cute today waving at the camera even. I think she is so “yeh tennis great but if you lose honey we can just go home and think of baby names.”

Sad for Dokic…they didn’t show the match at my place, they only showed a few seconds of her crying and Elena pating on her shoulder. 😦 Hope she’ll be ok. Happy days will come Jelena. at some point.

In other shallow news, I flove JJ’s dress….she looks great in blue. Sveta’s looking good too.
It would be great to see either of them winning (esp. Sveta)….but my girl Dina comes first. Dinara FTW!
