Wednesday ATP Results: Stuttgart, Bastad

Posted by gauloises1 on July 16, 2009

I am so, so, so over the Marat Safin farewell tour. He lost to Nicholas Almagro 63 76(6) in Bastad today.

After the match, Safin said “I’m tired of the tour, tired of staying at hotels and tired of travelling…I’ve had enough now”. Obviously feeling like he hadn’t underlined the point enough, he replied to a question about whether he would be interested in a coaching career by announcing “I’m tired of everything that has to do with racquets and balls.”

In typical Marat style, however, he has to mix up the irritating with being awesome. His post-match on-court interview was a delight, especially when he claimed to have given “the Swedish people” “a big gift” when he lost to Johansson in the finals of the Australian Open. Cue mildly confused clapping.

Soderling and Robredo both won but Frederico Gil fell to Gimeno-Traver. And Teimuraz Gabashvili put out Bjorn Phau. That’s right. He won another match.

In Stuttgart, the most interesting result was probably Paul-Henri Mathieu beating former champion Youzhny. Yeah, you know it’s a dull day when Mathieu is the biggest story. Oh, and in a continuation of today’s ‘Marat’ theme, lucky loser Sidorenko – last seen losing at Roland Garros to Marat – beat Oscar Hernandez in three sets. We may have another zombie there.

OK. . . Marat is like Jay-Z in that he’s always “retiring.”

Too bad Jay-Z actually wins stuff, though.

    Damn. that picture..THAT PICTURE!
I’d like to see how Marat will look like in 20 years, dude is getting hotter with age.
As much as I’ll miss him – well I miss him already, you blink and he loses before you get the chance to perv on him – I say this with love: Just fucking retire and stop torturing us with “I’m bored I’m done” talk. I’d rather he ended his career on a high note, like Wimbledon last year, but oh well…he is not the Marat we know and love if there is no drama involved.

Btw Gaul, flove the new layout. Good job, babe. 🙂

I woke up this morning, found out the score, didn’t bat an eye. I’m tired of the lackluster show from Marat. I love him, but if he’s so damn tired of the sport then just retire now and stop picking up the checks.

It’s the lol tour for me. Another town, another emo time. I’m tempted to suggest him to start a band or something. Or maybe to join Scientology.

I saw Marat play yesterday. He wasn”t moving and his BH was a disaster, and then, I saw a picture of him with 4 glasses in front of him taken just before the tournament started. I wish he just stopped playing last year.

Just quit it, Marat. but still make plenty of public appearances so we can carry on drooling, ok?
