Cincinnati: Marin Is Like a Box of Chocolates, In Many Ways

Posted by gauloises1 on August 18, 2009

Well, one. In that you never know what you’re going to get. He beat Boss in straight sets.

It’s a crazy rollercoaster ride, this Marin business. Jeremy Chardy took out Tommy Robredo and David Ferrer took care of Stanislas Wawrinka, who needs to start winning matches soon. There’s a lot of nappies he needs to pay for.

Sadly Gael Monfils was bounced by Dr Ivo. Although in better news, I’ve now learned how to play the serving game on his website. Ivo actually gave me a fist pump the other day.

Singles – First Round
[9] G Simon (FRA) d [WC] W Odesnik (USA) 63 62
I Karlovic (CRO) d [13] G Monfils (FRA) 64 67(5) 76(2)

J Chardy (FRA) d [15] T Robredo (ESP) 63 75
[16] R Stepanek (CZE) d V Troicki (SRB) 76(2) 10 ret. (foot)
I Andreev (RUS) d N Kiefer (GER) 61 75
B Becker (GER) d M Vassallo Arguello (ARG) 63 63
N Almagro (ESP) d D Sela (ISR) 64 10 ret. (groin)
P Mathieu (FRA) d M Zverev (GER) 67(4) 75 63
[Q] I Ljubicic (CRO) d F Serra (FRA) 46 63 64
D Ferrer (ESP) d S Wawrinka (SUI) 75 62

I was actually quite shocked (and saddened, really) to see Marin take care of Boss.

But more importantly — so exactly HOW do you play that serving game? I best go investigate.

Fifi made me very very sad. Didn’t he beat Karlovic once and Karlovic had no aces or something like that and it was crazy?? Am I making this up completely? Maybe FO ’08???

And yeah, Marin beating Boss was surprising to me too. Actually, Cincy is providing quite a few first round surprises- I’m on to you Cincy!!!

And Isner just took out HaASS! Joyful!

LINZ are you happy about that or what?

Haha, you know it IRTTY!!! I just came here to shout about it! WHAT A GREAT WIN for John Boy!!!!

I’m actually annoyed because Tommy is ranked #21 so it’s not officially another Top 20 win…but, I mean, come on- it totally is. r

He plays Chardy next? Oh, he can TOTALLY beat Chardy. Right??? I mean, I’m not supposed to take Chardy seriously am I? Cause I’m not sure that’s possible….

I feel like John (hah, “John” — glad we’re on a first name basis) has a shot at beating Chardy, actually … he’s been playing quite well lately.
(Ok, granted, I haven’t seen him since his match in D.C., but still.)

Haha- I’m on not only a first name, but a casual known-you-since-we-were-kids nickname basis with all the players. It’s awesome.

But seriously- I’m really just one degree of separation from Johny, which means you’re only two degrees- or something like that. Basically we’re all BFFs (wait- do you like him? You like him but not Roddick and Gaul’s the other way around- right?). Now here’s the big question- will I be able to finally get to meet him in person at the Open? Will the stars align?? Probably not, but let’s keep talking like they will.

He can definitely beat Chardy, Linz. 🙂 And, I’m so happy he beat Haas tonight — I thought he played really well, minus one poor service game in the second set.

Linz — yep, I like Isner. Not so keen on Roddick, although since he’s matured he has grown on me. (A tinytiny bit.)

And you’re going to the (NY) Open? Exciting! I’m jealous. And I hope you can meet him / all your tennis loverzzz. Remember us little people when you’re a full-time tennis star girlfriend, jetsetting the world and taking money baths.

LOL. Yes, I’M SO INCREDIBLY EXCITED. I live in Brooklyn, so it would have been ridiculous if I didn’t figure out a way to go- I’ve been very…unemployed until recently, so I’m not going to much, but stalking will be involved.

Also, IRTTY, you need to be on twitter. Are you on twitter? There will be lots of USOpen tweeting.

Thanks for the reassurance AmyLu- I really think he can/should too. *fingers crossed*
