Image is Everything: US Open Final

Posted by gauloises1 on September 15, 2009

Come on, you just *knew* there was going to be ridiculous picspam.

Roger on the run.

Elf on the warpath.

A friendly chat with Jake Garner.

Slipping away …

This guy has no personality.

The moment.

Give him a shirt, Fed.

With his guys.

US Open Tennis

No words.

Not many men dish out a … dish to Roger.

South America the Beautiful.

Julieta’s going to need a bigger garage.

Oh to be that trophy.

OH, to be that trophy.

Roger looks … small.

Welcome to the spotlight, Juan Martin del Potro.

    Exactly, exactly.

I’m happy for him, this was so emotional it’s unbelievable. The ups and downs of this match, had he lost we would all be scarred for life luckily for everyone, he won. How does one apply for the positioin of US Open trophy?

Who the F@#$ is this Julieta character?!

    Thank you so much Gauloises!
You just gave me my new computer wallpaper.

Nevermind. I just found out who she is: my future sister-in-law (and here I was thinking her a sexual rival, oops. ;))

The heart of the champion fully revealed last night. BumbleBee, much love. Respect.
I have hit rock bottom and lifted myself up again a few times during the match last night. First major bummer, Fed’s brilliant cross-court shot. I thought: Fed is in the zone. It might be over quite soon. My heart cracked a bit. Then I had flash-backs of the Sunday semis and missed opportunities and Fed being the Mighty Fed. Then my net connection died just about the time BumbleBee won the fourth set. For the record, I stayed up till 5 am. Could not sleep for hours afterwards. What a joyous moment. Absolute Big O in the Big Apple.

It is a great accomplishment beating Rafa in three straight sets at the Grand Slam semis. Great accomplishment, with Rafa being hurt or not. It takes monumental balls. Then, to have beaten Rafa and Fed in back-to-back GS matches. Not many have achieved that. I believe, none has.

Much love, precious BumbleBee. Much love.

    Also, I cried.

On the side note, I feel my brain is broken from all that has happened.
Also, I despise Norm Chryst (twat) and Dick Enberg (total twat). Let the boy speak in Spansih! He asked politely. Had to ask three times. Let him enjoy the greatness of the moment.
He triumphed where many have failed. He is the most adorable 20 year old BumbleBee in the whole wide world.

Olé, Olé, Olé, Olé, Delpo, Delpo!!!!!!

So I’m half-awake as I had to catch a 6:29 am flight, but I just had to come post here. I can’t tell you how proud I am of the Elf. That match was unbelievable. And, while the crowd definitely had more Roger fans, those of us rooting on the Elf were passionate. And loud. 🙂

JJ and about three Argentinean males who were sitting around us yelled encouragement to Elf in Spanish on literally every single point. At least one of them would call out — we were sitting right above his team. And, while everyone around us was Roger fans — quite a few got a kick out of our chants. And, several joined in by the end. So magical. We stayed until the Elf left the stadium, and all of us left just serenaded him over and over and over again.

Gauloises, if you’d like photos and video — just let me know your e-mail address. We’re happy to send along (they’re not that good — we have a pretty basic camera — but if you’d like our shots we’d love to share).

That was just stunning. And exciting. I’m completely incoherent right now (and I get to teach two classes today — and spend 7 hours on campus! Wohoo!), but I couldn’t be happier. Best. Wedding. Present. Ever.

Olé, Olé, Olé, Olé, Delpo, Delpo!!!!!!

OMG, AmyLu, I’m so glad you were there! I was thinking of you the whole time – well, not the whole time, but certainly in the brief intervals between swearing, praying, smoking, screaming, groaning and just frankly begging, my thoughts definitely went to you and Juan Jose 🙂

I *love* that you guys were cheering for him, I bet it made all the difference. No, really, I mean that 🙂

OF COURSE I want pictures, eyewitness accounts, whatever you’ve got! Shout me on

AmyLu, that’s awesome you had such a great time!

Love the picspam Gauloises. Oh and IRTTY, that pic was PRICELESS. Death glare, indeed.

So this is going to sound kind of mean, but it ran through my head last night. Roger’s now got the Grand Slam…as a finalist in all the Slams too. Elf saw to that.

Hard to believe the USO is over. Definitely my second favourite Slam this year 😉

Got your e-mail address, gauloises! And, we’ll send along stuff soon, I promise. We just need to upload the photos, but we should be able to do that soon. It’s so wonderful to have this site to celebrate with because I feel like no one else I know nor any place I frequent is excited enough (although two of my students are huge tennis fans — both big fans of Rafa, but not at all fans of Fed, so they were cheering for Del Potro yesterday and quite excited he won). 🙂

And, my mom is now firmly onboard the Elf train. She kept telling me this morning how wonderful he is, and how she’s rooting for him in the future.

I’m so glad you had such an amazing time, AmyLu! (And, obviously, jealous as well.)

Where were your seats? I always thought that stadium was so utterly GIGANDOR that if you were anywhere near the top the players would look like ants … dunno, though.

  18. AmyLu said

Thanks IRTTY! Never in my wildest dreams did I imagine that I’d get to witness what happened yesterday. 🙂 Our seats were section 112 so we were in the section right above the Elf’s box, actually. It was very easy to see there. And, he could definitely hear those of us yelling from there too. JJ was amazing at giving positive reinforcement. I’d be in despair on some points, like the botched overhead, the double faults, and he’d just yell (along with another Argentinean fan sitting a section over and several rows back) — no pasa nada, Juan (nothing happened, Juan!). The Argentinean fan was fantastic on break points — when the Elf was down a break point, he’d yell to him essentially, that you’re going to save it. I did a lot of Vamos cheers — and joined in on all of the Ole chants too, of course.

Our seats for the women’s final were much, much higher up, but I still thought the visibility was good. From there, though, it was much harder to tell if a ball was in or out, and the players were definitely smaller. And, while you can hear the sound the ball makes coming off the racket from high up, it’s definitely magnified lower. The sound when the Elf just unloaded on a FH is virtually impossible to describe. It really sounded like it was exploding off his racket.

  19. irefusetotellyou said

    Great description!

Love how you were in the midst of the Argentinean fan bonanza …

So were you able to pat his tush as he walked up to his box? Hah. 😉
