Beijing: Top Ladies Representing

Posted by gauloises1 on October 5, 2009

In marked contrast to how they fared in Tokyo, the top women are taking care of business at the China Open. In less than convincing fashion, in some cases, but they’re winning. Serena has landed, taking care of Kaia Kanepi 75 64 and announcing that she put the whole footfault incident behind her as soon as it happened.

And here I was afraid she’d learn and grow. The sole exception to the success for the seeds today came in the form of Caroline Wozniacki, presumably not over the flu that sidelined her in Tokyo, who lost to Maria Jose Martinez Sanchez 60 in the third. Anyway, unfortunately the success of the top ladies means that some second-tier favourites are out, including Sorana Cirstea who fell to Vera Zvonareva in straight sets and local heroine Zheng Jie, knocked out by Svetlana Kuznetsova.

And I’m not positive, but I think that Serena has a chance to reclaim the no. 1 ranking if she does better than Safina in Beijing. Which hasn’t happened as yet, as Safina beat Roberta Vinci 64 64. And incidentally had a variety of interesting photos taken of her.

This is a woman with all her ducks in a row. Believe it.
