Rejoice in the Maths. Love the Numbers.

Posted by gauloises1 on October 5, 2009

So I have some fascinating mathematical knowledge to drop on you. Ready? OK. Oh, first you need to know that Dinara Safina lost to wildcard Zhang Shuai 75 76(5) in Beijing today. That would be her fourth defeat in six matches, and already we’re in the crazy world of numbers …

Zhang Shuai is ranked no. 226, which makes this the worst ever loss by a reigning no. 1. The previous record was held by Ana Ivanovic, after she lost to no. 188 Julie Coin in the first round of the 2008 US Open.

Want more fascinating numbers? Well, I’m kind of confused about this and I don’t really trust what I’m hearing, but the consensus seems to be that if Serena Williams beats Ekaterina Makarova – ranked 55 this week, by the way – she’ll be back to the no. 1 spot for the 73rd week in her career.

Numbers, eh?
