Tomic Blames It On the Hamthrax.

Posted by gauloises1 on October 7, 2009

Remember that whole episode where it came out that Bernard Tomic had been invited to practice with Hewitt at Wimbledon and had refused, meanwhile asking Boss to hit with him? Well, the plot thickens. Tomic was in Melbourne yesterday for the Australian Open 2010 launch (they launch these things?), his first public appearance since the allegations, and claimed the reason he declined Hewitt’s invitation was because he had swine flu.

”The thing that happened over there was confidential,” said Tomic. ”I had swine flu and I couldn’t play, really, so it wouldn’t have been fair to expose Lleyton to the sickness I had. The doctor said I couldn’t play and you can check with the doctors if you want information about that.”

Tomic, 16, said he had not told Hewitt of the reason for declining his offer because: ”I couldn’t have told anyone. People would run away from me.” The pair or their representatives have not spoken since, Tomic confirmed.

”I mean, if I get the chance, look, I would love to,” he said. ”He’s an idol and an icon for Australian tennis. I was watching him as I was growing up, a lot, and I loved his game and it would be a pleasure to hit with him any time, anywhere, I think.”

So Tomic did not ask to hit with Ferrero, as claimed by the Hewitts? ”No, no, maybe you should go ask Ferrero, I think.” It did not happen? ”No.”

Team Hewitt seem to be fairly flabberghasted and also fairly furious about Tomic’s take on events. And I have to say, it doesn’t seem to add up. I remember during Wimbledon there was discussion of two doubles players diagnosed with swine flu and a number of ballkids and staff with possible cases. In all cases, those involved were kept away from the tournament. If Tomic’s doctor had diagnosed him with swine flu or even possible swine flu and it was made known to the tournament officials, there is no way he would have been allowed to contest the junior event or even, I don’t think, be around the practice courts and locker rooms. Instead, he reached the semi-finals of the boys’ singles.

So, if Tomic’s story were to be true, there’s a strong implication that he concealed a swine flu diagnosis from tournament officials, surely? It doesn’t add up, and Team Tomic are not coming over as particularly credible. I mean, please yell if I’ve missed something …

The whole affair seems to hinge upon whether or not there was an approach to Boss and/or his team for Tomic to hit with him. And I can’t see Boss involving himself in a nasty intra-compatriot spat like this one is involving into. Either way, it doesn’t look good for an amicable future for these two.

Kind of interesting, though.

Well, beyond the fact that I can’t figure out how Tomic concealed having swine flu from everyone and made the boy’s semis — why on earth would JCF lie about being approached by Tomic? That makes absolutely zero sense. And, I have to say, this story reminded me of my students: I have several students who miss class rather frequently, and lo and behold, the reason they can never come is because they have swine flu! For over a month, apparently!

If Tomic ever becomes successful on the senior tour I don’t see him being popular with us fans especially since we don’t particularly care for lying twats and their asshole fathers.

Tomic/Young for most unpopular doubles team ever anyone?!?!?

Maybe he contracted the Swine Flu from that Backstreet Boy.

    It only seems logical.

Yeah- I don’t get why JCF would be sitting there gossiping making up stories about Tomic. He has more important things to worry about such as his comeback and being so danged hawt. So now team Bernard has insulted two members of the Old New Balls. Watch out Roddick- you are next!

And how could Bernard be playing after he had the flu? My husband had H1N1 for a week and between the fever and the trots I don’t see how anyone could play tennis much less reach the semis of the Wimbly juniors. Granted husband is not a fit teenage tennis player but [Gob voice] Come on! [/Gob voice.

tomics a wanker…call me unpatriotic but i really dislike him…he needs to remember that his 16 and a nobody he hasnt done anything to deserve any credit from any of the top players and cant possibly expect people to actually like him and cheer from him if he remains so conceded…when hewitt (sadly) the best thing we’ve got in sport asks you to hit with him….you take it! imaginary pig flu or not….you take the oppotunity!!

first, it took me about five minutes to get the Hamthrax pun (i’m slow).

second, i can’t believe tomic is actually saying he had swine flu during Wimbledon. the whole world is freaking out about everyone getting infected and he plays while apparently diagnosed with swine flu? BS. the hewitt camp has every right to be pissed off…can’t believe he’s actually playing the swine flu excuse.

i basically echo what everyone up top has said.
