Tokyo: Second Round Loss Still On!

Posted by gauloises1 on October 8, 2009

Well done to Ernie who, wearing his qualifier hat, beat sixth seed Steps in Tokyo today 64 64.

If I’m not very much mistaken, this is a wally.

Don’t get too excited though, he can still lose in the second round, where he’ll play Pico. Oooh, a clash of the faves. Pico progressed after Armada tugboat Guillermo Garcia-Lopez retired 50 down.

Youzhny beat Nose Job, sadly if not surprisingly, and in other first-round action, ol’ sweaty bum himself, Richard Gasquet, beat Petzchner in straights to progress, as did second seed Jo-Wilfried Tsonga. Gael Monfils and Stanislas Wawrinka are both into the quarterfinals after straight set victories over Marco Chiudinelli and Simon Greul respectively. Good stuff.

Oh, and I’m delighted Hutch and Kerr are into the semi-finals. Albeit slightly confused as to how they’ve managed it while everyone else still seems to be playing the first round.

I’d love to see Stan make it to the Semis … the little tugboat that could. Or is a train? Whatever. Let’s just compromise and say it’s a barge.

I know you guys love Pico, but at least that guy has won two matches in a row at least once this year. Ernie needs this, and his skills should be better than Monaco’s on a fast indoor court, or at least so I hope.

That was one for you, crazyone.

I do love Pico. I love him like a mofo, but the fact remains that I am desperate for Ernie to get past the second round at least ONCE this year, and his time is running out.

Wollies FTW! At least Ernie finally won not just two, but THREE matches in a row. Baby steps!

Sorry- gotta go against the grain. Must root for Pico.

No but seriously, how are they in the semis when everyone else is playing the first round?!

I’d like to see Pico or Stan take it. But really I only care that Novak goes out in Beijing. The fewer points he gets the more likely JMDP is to end up number 4 at the end of the year.

Question is it better to play out if the player feels sick like JMDP did or retire with illness so it’s offically logged like Lopez did.

Need I say it? I’m for Pico. Even if he is wearing a buttercup yellow shirt.
