Tokyo: Jouzhny. Pronounced “Juicy”

Posted by gauloises1 on October 10, 2009

Second seed Jo-Wilfried Tsonga will meet unseeded Mikhail Youzhny in the Tokyo finals tomorrow. Jo backed up a win against Gulbis by taking less than an hour to polish off (French polish?) compatriot and good friend Gael Monfils 63 63 in the semi-finals.

Youzhny meanwhile has been on quite a nice little run, beating Berdych, Simon and finally Hewitt to book his place in the finals. No question he can turn it on when he wants to, is there?

Oh, and Ross Hutchins is in the doubles final with some Aussie guy. Go Hutch!

I watched most of the Youzhny/Hewitt match last night — I started to fall asleep at about 3-3 in the third set, and it was such a joy to see Youzhny playing well again. When he’s playing well, his one-handed backhand is my favorite one-handed backhand to watch — I don’t think it’s necessarily as classically “pretty” as Fed’s, for example, but I just love the way he strikes it, the pace he generates, and the damage he can do with it.

Amylu greetings to JJ. I know he must be sad because he had big expectations on a possible direct qualification of Ecuador today. They did not play as well as they usually do there in Quito and Uruguay played a good and focused match. Still Ecuador has the chance to qualify if they win in Chile. Uruguay has a tougher assignment in Argentina because Chile is already qualifed and they hate Argentina so they will rather help Ecuador qualify than help Argentina.

Do Youzhny’s upper teeth REMIND YOU OF ANYONE?

Also, it took me about 5 tries to spell “Youzhny” right.

Hi Linex — congratulations to Uruguay, we’re still rather gutted here. JJ’s not at all optimistic about Wednesday since Ecuador has never won in Chile before.

Haha, IRTTY. I also have major difficulties with writing Youzhny’s name. I have such a soft spot for him — he and I spent an afternoon at the pool together in Indian Wells, reading books. He had this gigantic book, which I found so endearing.
