ATP Week Ahead: Lyon, St Petersburg, Vienna

Posted by gauloises1 on October 25, 2009

Lyon

robin soderling lyon trophy

Draw here.

As you might expect, it’s heavy on the French, with Jo-Wilfried Tsonga and Gilles Simon anchoring a draw that includes Paul-Henri Mathieu (where’s he been lately?), Julien Benneteau, Michel Llodra, Josselin Ouanna, Marc Gicquel, Fabrice Santoro, Florent Serra, Sebastian Grosjean, and Arnaud Clement. Oh, and throw Pico and Ljubicic in there too. It must be said, however, that if either Jo or Gilles doesn’t win this title, there’s something seriously wrong with one or both.

St Petersburg

Draw here.

With defending champion Andy Murray not returning, the draw looks considerably less high-powered; Youzhny, Hanescu, Troicki and Jeremy Chardy are the top four seeds. Hanescu is already through to the second round, as is Ernests Gulbis, who’ll be set to lose to the winner of Chardy/’qualifier’ next. Marat Safin and Richard Gasquet are set to play each other in a battle of ‘who cares less?’ / did less drugs last night, and Wimbledon boys champion Andrey Kuznetsov is making his second wildcard main draw appearance in two weeks.

Vienna

Draw here.

With JMDP’s withdrawal, Vienna have done the smart thing and opted for the no. 2 six-foot-six recently-21 big-name-beater of 2009, Marin Cilic, who’s been wildcarded in as the top seed. Radek Stepanek, Gael Monfils and Philipp Kohlschreiber are the other top seeds, with somewhat-resurgent-of-late Feliciano Lopez, John Isner, Nicolas Almagro, and home performer Jurgen Melzer. I have literally no idea who’s going to win. But it should be fun.

oh.. Youzhman is playing at St.Petersburg also? nice. I thought he withdrew.
the tournament features 3 good players and one of them are set to be eliminated in the first round for sure. the bottom half will be a nice snoozefest.
A good chance for Gasquet to win a tournament, which means he won’t.

    HORSEFACE! HORSEFACE! HORSEFACE!

Also, could that Vienna trophy look any more like that staff thing in Lord of the Rings? [Probably, but still.]
