Last Woman Standing

Congratulations to Serena Williams, who put the seal on her year-end no. 1 finish by beating Venus 62 76(4) for the Doha title.

The first set was listless with both players hampered by injury and neither going at it full tilt, but things heated up throughout the second set after Venus gutted out a tough hold for 2-2 and by the end the tennis was fairly good, although Serena had control over the tiebreak all the way. Her serving was simply awesome today, losing only a handful of points on her serve throughout the match, and in a week that’s been full of tears, crampings, retirements and chokes, she’s gone undefeated to earn the title. Good for her.

As for Venus, I think there are some legitimate questions regarding her Slam future unless the off-season works some sort of miracle on her leg. What do you think?

With her $1.5 million cheque, Serena also became the first woman to rake in more than $6 million in on-court earnings in a single year. Not a bad week’s work.
