WTA Week Ahead: Bali Draw Set

Posted by gauloises1 on November 3, 2009

The draw for the inaugural 12-woman ‘Tournament of Champions’ in Bali was held today. For those not clear what the hell is going on with this one … nobody really knows. It’s for WTA players who have won one or more International-level tournaments and are ranked quite highly, or something.

Anyway, each of the ladies has won at least one International level title and sits around the 10-20 mark in the rankings, except for the wildcards Sabine Lisicki (who in fairness won Charleston and made a Wimbledon quarterfinal) and Kimiko Date-Krumm (who, in fairness, is old). It’s a second-tier Doha, basically, and the field doesn’t look bad.

Each of the top four seeds – Marion Bartoli, Sam Stosur, Yanina Wickmayer and Sabine Lisicki – heads a round-robin group, and play starts Thursday. The winner of each group advances to the semifinals on Saturday and so on.

These are the groups:

A: Marion Bartoli (Monterrey, Australian Open QF), Shahar Peer (Guangzhou, Tashkent), Magdalena Rybarikova (Birmingham)
B: Samantha Stosur (Osaka, French Open SF), Maria Jose Martinez Sanchez (Bogota, Bastad), Agnes Szavay (Budapest)
C: Yanina Wickmayer (Estoril, Linz, US Open SF), Anabel Medina Garrigues (Fes), Kimiko Date Krumm (Seoul)
D: Sabine Lisicki (Charleston, Wimbledon QF), Melinda Czink (Quebec City), Aravane Rezai (Strasbourg)

And now have some photos of the players looking lovely.

So this may be an incredibly dumb question, but is this event on TV anywhere? As far as I can tell in the US, it’s not — it isn’t currently listed on the Tennis Channel’s schedule, and I can’t imagine any other channel will be airing it.

And, that’s a really lovely photo of Sabine.

I shall be really pissed off if it isn’t, especially as I think it could produce better matches than we got in Doha, but I can’t find any evidence of it 😦

I also think it could produce much better matches than Doha — and I was hoping to watch some of it. To me, it would make far more sense to have Bali be the week before Doha because it really seems like such an after-thought now, which I think is unfortunate.

ok why the f isnt flavia penetta here?? aghhh i hate this licky looks great and wtf is marion wearing

Flavia can’t play because it clashes with Fed Cup. Another instance of the scheduling being messed up.

I totally agree with AmyLu; this event should have been played before Doha.

That picture of Wicky has been bothering me because she looks like someone and I can’t remember who. Or couldn’t. Just had the blinding revelation that she’s a young Princess Anne, only Anne wouldn’t be wearing an exploded rhododendron on her bust and would have opted for something buttoned up and tweedy.
