WTF Day Six: Adios and, er, Serbian Goodbye

Posted by gauloises1 on November 28, 2009

It’s been a tournament to forget for Rafa and his fans. If JMDP is built like a brick shithouse, then this week Rafa has increasingly looked built like a shit brickhouse, liable to fall apart at any moment.

He required treatment for what looked like an abdominal injury during a straight sets loss to Novak Djokovic. I really hope it’s just a niggle and that he’s healthy for the Davis Cup final, because as I’ve said I think that getting back on clay and playing for his country could be such a boost for him right now.

I really recommend reading C Note’s post at Forty Deuce on Rafa’s current form and the speculation thereof.  She’s a smart cookie, that one.

Anyway, the match was reportedly anything but a classic, with Nole cream crackered after 94 matches in 2009.

But at least there was net love …

… and, for some reason, air guitar.

Not even Nole’s air guitar could save him, though, as Davydenko won in three sets 76(4) 46 63 to advance to the semifinals together with Robin Soderling.

If the Nole-Rafa match was a disappointment, this one was an absolute cracker. I thought both guys were fantastic and there was almost nothing between them until the third set when Kolya upped his game and Soderling faded. They’ve been I think the two best players in the group this week and the semi-finals should be great.

Soderling will face del Potro (they’re 1-1) and Kolya will take on Federer (they’re, um, 0-12).

Holy cow! 0-12?! Wow. Even though their head to head is unbelievably lopsided, I’ve no confidence in Roger and Kolya’s match. I do hope Roger wins though.

Also, has anyone else begun to desperately miss David Nalbandian?

I’m really happy for Kolya — I love Nole, but I think he’s mentally fried so I was happy for Kolya to go through.

I’m just pretending Rafa skipped London. 🙂 On the injury front, I’m fairly certain it was a back issue — he didn’t say much in his press conference about it because he hadn’t had a chance to have it really evaluated yet. I’m hoping it’s nothing because I’d really like him to be at full health for Davis Cup.

Shit, both RobSod and Kolya are 0-12 against Rog? That’s a bit … huh.

    Roger/Delpo final? Hmmmm.

I like to put it this way. Makes me even more bewildered. The Roger’s H2H vs Nikolay Vladimirovich Davidenko and Robin BO Carl Soderling is 24:0.

Nole explained to our journos afterwards that “playin’ a guitar” for a moment there was to show his buddies in the team, in particular Miljan, that he still no matter what after all, had that one more match in him. He plays guitar in his spare time. Not a virtuoso by far but it helps him relax when home and on the road.

Watching Rafa and Nole play I was just dying a little inside no matter what the score was.
They both got out played by Soderling, and one was already out whilst the other depended on Soderling and Nikolay’s racquet. Thet both looked subdued and kind of sad, lost, even had their subdued celebrations. As if they simply wanted to get it over with.

I have always liked Nikolay, such a nice lad. I rather Novak lost to Rafa so he would have been finished him off right there and Rafa would have got one win at least.

Meh. I am in a state of shock.

I didn’t see it, but I think Jewell had a very similar reaction 😦 It doesn’t sound like a fun one.

What a horrible day for you. All I can say is that I’m sorry and that there’s much more glory to come for Rafa and Nole. This too shall pass!
