So How’s That Bromance Coming?

Posted by gauloises1 on December 3, 2009

It’s looking like Juan Martin del Potro will be seeded no. 4 for the Australian Open as he’s due to temporarily displace Murray in the rankings.

You know I’m not good with numbers, but The Times assures us that Murray’s failure to defend his Doha points (he’s playing Hopman Cup instead) will put Delpo 5 points ahead for the week of January 11th, when the seedings for the Australian Open will be done. They will likely revert back the next week because Delpo isn’t planning to defend his Auckland title.

So once again Delpo should have his own quarter of a Slam draw, because that worked out so well last time …

    You mean Australian Open, right?

So you are already at the US Open?? Can I get my AO first? 😉

And is that a little bit of defeatism I hear, huh? He will do just fine (I’ll conveniently ignore last year’s memorable quarterfinal massacre).

The #4 (Murray) and #5 (Tsonga) ranked seeds were in the same quarter of the draw at AO 2009, and Verdasco beat them both. You may think Verdasco’s evil, but he is really fun to look at, to say nothing of watching him play tennis. In theory then Murray and del Potro may be in the same quarter regardless. So I’m wondering what “once again Delpo should have his own quarter of a Slam draw, because that worked out so well last time …” means. Is the 4th seed considered to have his own draw because his name is the at the top of that quarter / he’s the highest ranked in that quarter? I’m a little disillusioned I don’t know that answer to this.

I tend to mentally divide any draw into the ‘quarters’ containing the top four seeds – is that confusing? If so, sorry. And I was referring to the only other time that JMDP has been the highest seed in a Slam quarter – Wimbledon 2009, where he lost in the second round as Carrie points out.

FWIW, I don’t think it will actually make a great deal of difference, but being seeded #5 rather than #4 means that you’re likely to meet a top seed in the quarterfinals rather than in the semifinals. Not that it matters if you’re on good enough form – Verdasco’s run at the AO 2009 being a prime example, as you point out.

I figured by “having your own quarter” you meant being the highest seed in that quarter. Thanks.

Sorry, was that answer really patronising? I was half asleep when I wrote it. Should not reply to comments first thing in the morning.

Not at all. I did not realize JMDP had his own quarter at Wimbledon after Rafa dropped out. But I don’t think even Elf thought he would do well at Wimbledon regardless of who was in his quarter. Obviously, that area of his game needs some improvement, and I don’t think it should reflect on his ability to blow his quarter away at AO 10. Go, go, Delpo!

When Elf was seeded in the top four because of Rafa’s withdrawel at Wimbles he went out in the second round.

Is Elf doing any pre-AO tournies? I hope so- I want him to warm up.

playing Kooyong exhibition, hence the drop back to 5 a week after getting to 4. boyo should just come to Sydney and kill the field here. it (ATP side) is looking pretty weak at the mo…

Sorry for the typo. I have pretty much no excuse except obviously a desire to return to the US Open …

See, when I saw this headline, I thought, “Well, Andy just became single, and Elf made a point of mentioning HE’s single…”

(I haven’t looked at the tennisslash comms in weeks, and I’m kind of afraid to now.)

He’s still on the prowl I mean lookout for a lady:

With his holiday already started, Delpo said, “Now the last thing I want is to talk about tennis. I was told that the rosarinas here are very pretty, so lets see if i can find a girlfriend here”

Very interesting news about the seeding. Juan will be fine Gauloises. 🙂 Of course, I am frazzling about AO already. Want to share a bottle (or 2) of wine?
