A Whole New World …

Posted by gauloises1 on January 3, 2010

Roger and Rafa, a.k.a the kids whose mum does use new improved Daz Ultra for whiter whites, made an appearance at the Souq Watif in the historic centre of Doha to promote the Qatar Exxon Mobil Open.

They played tennis. On a carpet. In the air. Edward Said is probably turning over in his grave, if he’s dead.

Hands up who isn’t mentally recreating this with our heroes. (Bonus points if you’re thinking of this version.)

You know me too damn well.

Tell me, Princess, now when did you last let your heart decide?

(Whoever wants to be the Princess in this situation can sign right up. I’ve got dibs on Aladdin.)

Also — that carpet suspended in air terrifies me. Not as much as the helicopter tennis pad thing from a couple of years ago, but …

P.S: In retrospect, maybe the carpet wasn’t that high up; just a trick of the camera? Anyway, either way, I’d still be scared.

I saw a short video of that: there was this metal platform covered with carpet suspended one foot above the ground on cables from a crane; they climbed on it and then the crane lifted it up to the height of the first floor. They patted quite a few volleys back and forth, even drawing applause from the crowd. But, yeah, it was scary, their feet were almost glued to the spot and they did have some wiring going through the carpet up to their waists (Safety? Mikes?).

Disney reference = so much win.
I don’t even know how they could have played on that thing, unless their feet were glued on to it with a magnetic slider.

    PS: Happy new year, everyone!

Loved the reference, although I’ve now had the lyrics to A Whole New World in my head all night. 🙂

There’s no way you could have gotten me to play tennis on that thing. Absolutely no way.

I am surprised Rafa agreed to that. I had always heard he is afraid of heights. Maybe he felt okay about it since they practically tied them to the platform.

I always get a bit of a chuckle at these Doha promos. Last year they played on a mini court on a boat. This one actually looked cool visually though.
