WTA Auckland, Brisbane: Pennetta, Ivanovic, Pavlyuchenkova Win

Posted by gauloises1 on January 4, 2010

Oddly – can’t think why – I expected high-profile seeds to be tumbling left and right in the tumultuous, tremulous early days of the season. No such thing. Auckland top seed Flavia Pennetta knocked off Jill Craybas 62 64. And wore purple.

When I am Flavia, I shall wear purple.

Ana Ivanovic survived a topsy-turvy encounter with Jelena Dokic which, judging from the photos, I’m sorry I missed.

The only seeds to fall, in fact, were fifth seed Alisa Kleybanova courtesy of a good win for Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova, and Auckland eighth seed Anabel Medina Garrigues at the hands of Magdalena Rybarikova.

Oh Pavs. You do take winning hard.

I’m sorry I watched the first set and a half of Ivanovic-Dokic. It was sandwiched between the two matches I was interested in so I decided to keep the stream open and watch. All I can say is that it was not good. I didn’t really see and improved serve from Ana and her body language was depressing. All in all, it was very low quality tennis from both of them. I feel bad for Jelena. I hope she recuperates and Ana gets her confidence back because a happy giggling winning Ana is much better for our game.

    Flavia, you’re awesome.

Pavs, that is the most ill-fitting top I have ever seen.
