Roddick Tops Radek in Brisbane

Posted by gauloises1 on January 10, 2010

Please note the management accepts no liability for any unintended double entendres.

Andy Roddick d. Radek Stepanek, 76(2) 76(7)

Can we just pause to acknowledge that this guy is thirty?

Thirty.

Great way for Roddick to start off 2010 with a trophy, particularly after the somewhat disappointing way last season ended for him.

Pretty. Also an apt illustration of just how overly baggy that shirt is.

Is this good or bad? I can’t tell.

Somewhere Linz is smiling beatifically.

The match was pretty hilarious, Andy giving up a 5-1 (!!) lead in the second set as well as a 6-1 lead in the tiebreak. Of course Steps was making Andy all sorts of pissy with the Stepantics, so i’m glad Roddick pulled it out. NO ONE wearing such awful tennis gear should win ANYTHING EVER. The only worse dressed person was Stepanek’s coach.

This is pure gold, G. Thanks.
Only the first tournament of the season and I already had a mini heartattack.Judging by this match, 2010 should be yet another Roddicoaster.
I don’t remember when was the last time Andy gave away a double break lead on HC. That was excruciating to go through.
I flove Radek, too. He is incredibly fun to watch, just not today. 🙂

Budour is right- this was a Roddicoaster (love the term by the way B, I plan on stealing it!)

I could dwell on how he almost had an epic collapse TWICE in the second set, but instead I’ll dwell on the positive:

He’s undefeated in 2010. He went 11 months without a trophy, but now he has one. He “stayed the course”, even when he was giving himself more problems than his opponents were. He has gone 10 straight years with a title. He’s now moved above a tie with Hewitt for 3rd most titles of active players (28). He got in a lot of match play in singles and doubles, which he really, really needed after not playing for 3 months. He beat 3 opponents that have given him trouble in the past.

See? So many positives. Bring it on, Australia.

(and thanks for the shout out G, it made my morning. Well, that and the morning beer I had to celebrate).

I, too, was rather shocked by that fact that Steps is 30/31. I mean, it’s not like he doesn’t *look* it, but his movement and such is rather phenomenal.

For, you know, such an ungodly old fogey. 🙂
