Sydney: Serena, Elena to Meet in the Final

Posted by gauloises1 on January 14, 2010

So it isn’t surprising that Serena Williams and Elena Dementieva will contest the Sydney final. It’s kind of surprising how it happened. Serena beat Aravane Rezai 36 75 64, and Elena beat Victoria Azarenka, 63 61. And yes, I did get those scores the right way round.

Poor Aravane. She played absolutely spectacularly to lead 63 52, and then Serena … was Serena. It’s just what happens.

The last time I properly watched Elena Dementieva, she was getting her ass absolutely handed to her by Licky in Perth. Something has clearly clicked between then and now, as she dismissed Victoria Azarenka in straight sets. I’m not sure whether to ascribe this to Azarenka being Azarenka, or Dementieva playing well. Either way, the scoreline looks very good for Demmy.

“WHY IS THIS HAPPENING?!”

“….”
