AO Day Two: Epic

Posted by gauloises1 on January 19, 2010

You just knew that Gasquet vs Youzhny was going to be a cracker (or a clusterfuck, depending on whether you see depth or a lottery) and it didn’t disappoint.

Forget Ernie; Richard is the real king of beautiful losses. Today came courtesy of Mikhail Youzhny, 67(9) 46 76(2) 76(4) 64, and I personally wanted to take it to bed with me. Youzhny lost two tight sets, was cramping and failed to serve out the third, only to take advantage of an error-strewn tiebreak from Gasquet. As his cramps grew worse, he came back from 0-3 down, saved two match points and then somehow recovered a break in the fifth to receive it out.

The whole thing was terribly manly (well, except for Richard), gave the officials a chance to try out the new cramping rules, and all in all was fun for all concerned.

Except Richard.

So, Richard led with a break in the fourth set. He had two match points. Despite this, or BECAUSE of this, he lost. When I came back home and saw the result, I wasn’t surprised. I knew he would blow it away when he was broken in the third. I was just frustrated. But now reading this and seeing the pictures…I guess I need to go have a little cry.

How come the only time Richard ever won a 5 setter it was against Roddick? HOW COME?? It’s just not fair.

Yes, poor Andy, was leading 2 sets and 1/2 and lost to him. heartbreaking but Andy beat him since so revenge is sweet. Andy is playing today.

It was amazing. I was watching surreptitiously at work (well, not very surreptitiously as the whole room can see my screen, so …) and I nearly yelled so many times. Brilliant stuff.

Can you tell me if we can post a thread about tennis or if it is only you who can?????? Thanks.

It’s only me – this is a blog, not a forum. If you’re looking for somewhere you can do that, you could try talkabouttennis.com, menstennisforums.com, or there are some really good tennis communities on livejournal.com if you have an account there.

I only managed to catch (or, at least, my DVR did) the last two sets, but it was really quite fantastic.

Although the crowd was a tad bit obnoxious, there were truly some amazing shots by both Youzhny and Reeeeshard … wish I had seen the whole thing.

Oh man that looked like a fun match! Damn NZ and our coverage – we only get Rod Laver. Are you watching this online? Could you possibly tell me the site?
Thank you for the pics G – I can’t get over how different Richard looks without his cap. He looks like an actual adult now. Are there any pics of the Pico-Ernie match?
