Brazilian player Marcos Daniel is under investigation after he was allegedly involved in a rumble with a female spectator at the Australian Open yesterday.

The tournament referee ordered the inquiry after the alleged incident between 31-year-old Daniel and the spectator following his first round loss to Colombia’s Alejandro Falla.

“The Tournament Referee’s office is looking into the alleged incident,” a Tennis Australian spokesman confirmed.

The Age understands Daniel had an altercation with Colombian spectators, and that the woman was caught up in a disagreement between the player and her brother.

However, witnesses courtside told a Reuters photographer that a scuffle had taken place when the woman approached Daniel, the world number 88, as he was walking away from the court after the match.

The woman was not injured in the alleged incident but witnesses said she had ended up on the ground. Photographs taken by Reuters showed mud on the back of her trousers.

Daniel was not available for comment because he had already left the Melbourne Park tennis complex when officials were notified about the incident.

Under the rules for players at grand slam tournaments, “the unauthorized touching of an official, opponent, spectator or other person” by competitors is strictly forbidden.

In other tennis-players-and-alleged-violence news, a taxi driver from Cordoba has accused David Nalbandian of assault. The whole thing sounds dead fishy to me. Julia at VamosDavid has all the details.

According to Ole, no charges were filed in the Nalbandian situation — and the whole story sounds beyond fishy to me.

There are just so many things about it that don’t make sense.

It’s disheartening, but I really think this is someone just out to score some cheap publicity.

Completely agree — I mean why on earth would construction workers be showing up to work at 9 pm? Who does construction work at 9 at night?!?

And, I really think David needs to work on security — like securing a lock for his gate for starters.

By now, charges have been filed – by both sides. For breaking and entering by David and for assault and battery by the taxi driver.
I guess this is what I get for thinking it couldn’t get any worse after Auckland and the abdominal tear…

Well, VamosDavid reports now that both are pressing charges, Nalby for breaking and entering and that crazy asshole for “assault and battery”

Seriously? you break into somebody’s house, you come up with the most moronic excuse for doing so and now pressing charges for assult? WTF??

Is he ever going to catch a break? To say that my heart is aching for Nalby is an understatement.

Daniel was contacted by Brazilian press and is apparently pretty surprised because he says he doesn’t even know why they are talking about a woman. He said he argued with a man, that it was a heated discussion, the umpire had to get involved and that was it. He claims that after reading the news he was puzzled, but checked at the ATP an there was no investigation about the incident until that moment. The only thing he recalls involving a woman was that one woman that was close to the guy he was arguing with called him a bad loser, but he claims that was it.

      Thanks Carol for the info!

I read on the wires that he’s been cleared of all wrongdoing – I shall try and find time to post that later.
