AO Day Seven: Not Quite Sure How This Happened

Posted by gauloises1 on January 25, 2010

Justine Henin beat Yanina Wickmayer 76(3) 16 63 to advance to the quarterfinals. I must admit I was doing a combination of snoozing and channel-flicking while this match was on, but every time I watched a few points, I thought Yanina was playing much better (as good as I’ve ever seen her, really). She was so focussed and intensive and aggressive. Good stuff.

But if there’s anyone that can fight and claw and scramble their way to a victory over an inspired opponent, it’s Justine. And the Henbackhandening rolls on.

Justine will face the on-a-roll Nadia Petrova in the quarters. She’s 12-2 up in the H2H. So … best of luck with that, Nadia.

I still can’t get on the Justine bandwagon. And while Nadia hasn’t got a hope, I’m still going to dream.
Yanina really impressed me today, surviving on qualies and wildcards to get her game back after all the WADA shit, and facing her countrywoman without a flicker of self doubt.
