Battle for the No. 1 Singles Spot

Posted by gauloises1 on February 21, 2010

Sam Querrey and John Isner will face off tomorrow for the Memphis title in a match during which the phrase ‘passing of the torch’ is sure to be used roughly 90,000 times, due to James Blake and Andy Roddick announcing their decision not to play Davis Cup this year. Unfortunately the narrative was underlined when Querrey beat Roddick 75 36 61 in the quarterfinals (after a bizarre, almost uncontested, final set, Roddick is now absent from the Dubai draw) before knocking out Gulbis in straight sets. Isner, meanwhile, beat Karlovic and then Petszchner for his second title shot of 2010.

I kind of like both these two, I have to admit. They’ve done sterling work in improving themselves and shown they’re willing to do the necessary Oedipal business. Good stuff ahead of Davis Cup.

I really like both too — I just asked JJ who he’s rooting for in the final (he also likes both), and he couldn’t answer. I can’t pick who I want to win either — maybe Sam because I feel like he needs it more right now? Anyway, very happy that both are in the final.

I’m probably gonna have to go with Sam. Though I’m a huge fan of both. Does anyone know what happened to Fish and Knowles in the super tiebreaker? Sam and John were up a minibreak at 5-3 and serving and then Fish and Knowles retired.

I think I’d like Sam to win…just ‘cos he’s had a lackluster start to the season. I’m happy he’s in the final.

I like both too. Who doesn’t like both these guys?

Don’t really care who wins. Just want a good match.

I will be going for John cause I’m a Kiwi and he won the Heineken Open, thus any victory of his this year will get mentioned on the news. And any increase in tennis news can only be a good thing 🙂

How awesome did Ernie play this tournament, so proud of him. Last time he made a semi was in 06 St petersburg which was his first atp tournie 🙂

Rooting for Isner – i really don’t like querrey i never had really.

LOL, I actually laughed at the “Oedipal” comment. It hurts but it’s true, and since I do love Sammy and Johny so much I need to get over my issues with Roddick being a complete moron this year (since Wimbledon really) and just be happy for them. I honestly didn’t expect both guys to be having such spectacular results so soon- maybe 2011, but not this year.

I love these guys and to have them play each other in a final of a 500 right before leading the US Davis Cup team is just a HUGE coming out party for them, and it’s really exciting to have followed them both since they were both just playing the Challengers. I’ll be rooting for Johny, but will be happy for either. Unfortunately I won’t get to watch. Boo. Hopefully there will be lot of bromance. And pics of the bromance. You know, if you’re in the mood for a picspam post…. =D =D

As for Roddick, it’s just infuriating being his fan right now, and I felt like this even when he won his title earlier this year. He’s just playing insanely passively, which is best captured in his 25% BP conversion rate, an INSANELY poor number. I’m worried about his shoulder, hopefully having the next couple of weeks off will help him out. Stefanki needs to knock some sense into him. He’s got lots of points to defend and I do not want to see him drop out of the Top 8 before Wimbledon. That would be a DISASTER. So hopefully he uses this time off to get healthy- MENTALLY and physically and then he can go on some good runs at IW and Miami.
