Is There Any Way That Limes Could Sponsor the WTA?

News broke today that Sony Ericsson is radically restructuring its deal with the WTA. It will remain the tour’s lead financial backer but will no longer be the title sponsor.

According to the Sports Business Journal, this is a good thing even though the WTA will get $27 million over three years as opposed to the $14.7 million annually it received under the old six-year deal (due to expire in 2011), because Sony Ericsson weren’t expected to renew their commitment to the tour at all. In addition, the WTA can sell naming rights to the season-ending championships.

I’d like to see some sort of tie-in with the Corona sponsorship of the ATP tour; lime, maybe, or curry, or ladycabs or pregnancy tests, I don’t know. Failing that, how about some kind of girly brand of alcohol? I vote Lambrini.

    Oh shit, with more combined events and Corona sponsoring the ATP, I *totally* vote pregnancy tests.

    Wonder who got the better end of the deal? Sony Ericsson or WTA? I believe Sony Ericsson got the better deal as a financial backer with TV and digital rights and their name still will be on the net at all WTA events as I agree that Sony Ericsson was going to walk away from being the title sponsor at the end of 2010.
