Fed Cup Nominations Announced

Posted by gauloises1 on April 15, 2010

The player nominations for next weekend’s Fed Cup semifinals and play-offs have been announced, and they’re mainly an excuse to use this picture:

Some things that jump out:

  • Mary-Joe Fernandez is really doing all she can to get one of the Williams to play the semi-final by publicly leaving a spot open; not a bad tactic.
  • Demmy is stepping up to play for Russia again, which usually brings out the best in her.
  • Why is Kateryna Bondarenko not playing for the Ukraine? Anyone?
  • Why is Gisela Dulko not playing for Argentina? Does she ever play Fed Cup?
  • The Belgian team is (a) incredibly overpowered for a tie against Estonia, and (b) likely to produce the most interesting internal dynamics

Full nominations below.

Glad to see Yurika Sema getting a chance despite her body odour issues.

Gisela’s stated that she’s taking the year off from Fed Cup. I don’t know why or whether it’s a habitual thing for her, but it was in one of her doubles pressers with Flavs.

Ula Radwanska had the surgery for her ailing back recently and she is still not fully healthy. It is unknown at this point when she will be back on the tour. (she hasn’t play since AO)
