It Is Not Defended.

Posted by gauloises1 on May 19, 2010

On his return from the States to check on the progress of his recuperation, Delpo confirmed that he won’t be playing the US Open.

Citing a desire not to rush his recovery, he said that he won’t play until Paris in the autumn at the earliest. A return in 2011 looks much more likely.

“If I have to return next year or at Paris Bercy, I will,” said Del Potro, referring to the Paris Open.

[…] “Thankfully, I’ve already undergone the operation and everything went well. Now I just have to recover,” said Del Potro, who will continue his recovery in his home town of Tandil, 350 km south of Buenos Aires.

“I don’t want to get desperate in rehab and I’m comfortable with the fact that if I do my time I’ll be playing again on the circuit,” he said.

“I know it’s going to take a long time to get back to being among the top players like I was before, but what I want more than anything is to return.”

(You can see some video of an extremely hairy airport Elf modelling the latest in a well-established tradition of awful baseball caps here.)

It always seemed wildly optimistic that he would be able to play the US Open, and obviously the last thing he should do is rush his recovery, if recovery there is to be.

Still …

mope indeed, cat. bad news but like you said anything but was horribly optimistic. a long time to return to the form of the top players? I hope that doesn’t mean he’s going to be pulling an Andy Murray and start losing. Thanks for the video – even when he looks crap he looks beautiful. c’est dommage.

Much love. I was stupidly optimistic that he’d get back for a tournament pre-USO and be able to play the thing. I guess it’s good that he doesn’t risk a career ending blowout of his wrist (a pretty key thing) and he really still is super young but… good lord, what a blow to his career and the tour on a whole. Sad, sad stuff.

This is better for his long term career but selfishly I am bummed and miss him. I just hope when he returns he is able to get back to the levels he was before his injury and beyond.

    This really sucks.

Poor darling. Even though he’s older and like a foot taller, I just want to give him a hug and tell him it’ll all be better.

    *MOPE*

Sorry. Even though he’s not a good match-up for Rafa (my numero uno) I’ve really been missing DelPo and it sucks that he can’t defend his GS title (believe me, Rafans understand what THAT feels like)! I was at the match he lost to Cilic at the AO (only a few rows back from the court, got some nice shots!) and can’t believe that might have been the last match he played in a year. It sucketh much. Commis.

While I certainly was expecting this news, not at all what I wanted to hear. 😦

My god at the hair, he stopped shaving for like 3 days and whoof facecarpet. Me like. XD The news itself isn’t surprising, I just want him back healthy, willing and back on court, if that’s in 2011 so be it. *sigh*

There is no god, no benevolent being creating order out of the violent randomness that is our callous universe. I am despondent.

    Come back stronger Delpo!
