A Tall 6’6″

Posted by gauloises1 on February 27, 2011

Juan Martin del Potro is in the finals at Delray Beach, and I’m totally calm about it.

He crushed Gabashvili 61 61, took care of Kevin Anderson 64 64, and last night beat second seed and world no. 16 Mardy Fish 61 75. He even came back from 1-4 down and in trouble on his own serve in the second set to nick it all. He’s in his first final since the WTFs in 2009 and will probably crack the top 100 if he wins. He’s in a final. I don’t care if it is at a tournament that sounds like a MarioKart race track.

He’ll be up against Janko Tipsarevic, who’s looking for his maiden title. So there’s that.

I liked this from Fish too:

He’s so tall. He’s a tall 6’ 6”. He has long arms and it feels that any penetrating ball I hit is still in his strike zone.  I’ve got to almost shank a ball almost over his head to get it out of his strike zone. It seems like his strike zone is five feet… and pretty much any ball on his forehand is a deadly shot.

Congrats to the Elf!! Also since he is the official mascot ( for now), congrats to Ferru for beating an inspired Almagro last night in Acapulco. Great match for those that love clay tennis, and David never gave up, despite serving for the second set and losing it in the breaker.

Delpo was looking fearsome in that match against Fish last night. And the best part is, he’s still tightening up his game. Great quote from Mardy, btw – I couldn’t help giggling gleefully at that one 🙂

Was really pleased with DelPo’s match last night. His form was amazing in the first set, but I was (strangely enough) even happier with how he played the second. His form dipped and Fish dug in, but he hung in there and battled through. That can only help his confidence — and it’s great to see him figure out a way to win the set because there will definitely be days/matches when he’s not playing his best and this shows him he can still find a way to win.

I’m very calm about today’s match, too. I am not expecting too much (he sounded SO tired in his oncourt interview last night, even more languid than usual!), but I obviously hope he wins. This comeback is going swimmingly as far as I’m concerned, and he realistically couldn’t have asked for a better swing prior to IW/Miami.

If you had a special dedication to Dulko here, I would suggest you play the lottery. Regardless with Ferrer and Delpo winning this weekend I think timely, on the ball, and world’s most are all accurate descriptors of this blog. YAY!
