Hobart: Peer, AMG, A Bondarenko Through

Posted by gauloises1 on January 14, 2010

Shahar Peer kept her impressive early-season form going today, surviving a tough challenge from Carla Suarez-Navarro to progress to the semifinals, 46 76(4) 75.

You don’t make her angry.

Next up for Shahar is Sara Errani, who beat qualifier Kirsten Flipkens to make the semis. In the top half of the draw, Anabel Medina Garrigues faces Alona Bondarenko after victories over Gisela Dulko and Zheng Jie respectively.

Top seed. Somehow.

The day didn’t get any better for Dulko and Zheng, who were then beaten by Chan and Niculescu in the doubles. Time to head to Melbourne, methinks.

Singles – Quarterfinals
(1) Anabel Medina Garrigues (ESP) d. (8) Gisela Dulko (ARG) 61 57 61
(2) Shahar Peer (ISR) d. (5) Carla Suárez Navarro (ESP) 46 76(4) 75
(4) Alona Bondarenko (UKR) d. (7) Zheng Jie (CHN) 75 75
Sara Errani (ITA) d. (Q) Kirsten Flipkens (BEL) 63 64

Doubles – Quarterfinals
Chan/Niculescu (TPE/ROU) d. (3) Dulko/Zheng (ARG/CHN) 63 64

Bali Day Two: Rezai Into Semifinals

Posted by gauloises1 on November 6, 2009

Give it up for Aravane Rezai, who won her second round robin match today, defeating Melinda Czink 63 75 to solidify her position as the Group D semifinalist.

aravane rezai

Sadly this means that Licky’s last match of the season will be a meaningless round-robin against Czink tomorrow, but them’s the breaks.

None of the other groups have a semifinalist yet, meaning that there’s a lot riding on the final day of round-robin play. Magdalena Rybarikova is out of Group A after losing to Shahar Peer in straight sets today. Peer will face Bartoli to decide the semifinalist.

magdalena rybarikovashahar peer

Similar situation in Group B, where Agnes Szavay lost her second round-robin match to Maria-Jose Martinez Sanchez, 46 64 60. Martinez Sanchez (who won the doubles title last week in Doha) will take on Samantha Stosur tomorrow.

maria jose martinez sanchez

In Group C, the situation is a bit up in the air after Kimiko Date-Krumm pulled off the upset against Anabel Medina Garrigues today.

kimiko date krummanabel medina garrigues

Date-Krumm and Wickmayer both have one win, and Wickmayer has a match in hand, so if she (or alternate Vera Dushevina, quite possibly) can beat Medina Garrigues tomorrow, then into the semis Wicky/Vera will go. If Medina Garrigues wins, then … well, then maths of some fashion is done, I believe.

Round Robin – Day 2
Group A: Shahar Peer (ISR) d. Magdalena Rybarikova (SVK) 61 76(4)
Group B: María José Martínez Sánchez (ESP) d. Agnes Szavay (HUN) 46 64 60
Group C: (WC) Kimiko Date Krumm (JPN) d. Anabel Medina Garrigues (ESP) 64 63
Group D: Aravane Rezai (FRA) d. Melinda Czink (HUN) 63 75

(Thanks/blame to jewell for the post title.)

Apparently, while I was drinking and crying and drinking and so forth, Kimiko Date Krumm beat Daniela Hantuchova, Maria Kirilenko, and Anabel Medina Garrigues to win the 2009 Hansol Korea Open in Seoul.

She’s almost 40, which makes her the second oldest woman (behind Billie Jean King) to win a WTA singles title. Wow.

Istanbul: Ancient Medina Garrigues

Posted by gauloises1 on July 31, 2009

Happy birthday to Anabel Medina Garrigues, who turned 27 today and celebrated in Istanbul.

Unfortunately the party bus isn’t the only thing that stopped today; old lady Garrigues lost to Vera Dushevina in straight sets, 61 62.

“Hey you kids, get off my lawn.”

“Whatever, grandma,” she seems to say.

Gilles, Tommy, Stan, AMG Out. But Pico Won!

Posted by gauloises1 on July 21, 2009

Pico won. That’s really all you need to know.

You want more?! OK, well, Portoroz second seed Anabel Medina Garrigues went out to qualifier Vesna Manasieva, just to make it really embarrassing if Dinara doesn’t win the thing, and Vera Dushevina had a good win over last week’s Palermo semifinalist Tathiana Garbin.

Alize Cornet won a match in Bad Gastein – ssssh! – but apparently it seems to be a rule that only one French slumper can win a match on any given day, as Gilles Simon lost in Hamburg to wildcard Daniel Brands. I promised I would honour this victory with photos of Brands. So … yeah.

International German Open Hamburg 2009brands

Auf gehts, Fragman.

It’s got to the point now where one doesn’t even bother speculating about a Gilles loss. One just sucks it up and grimly carries on.

Anyway, he wasn’t the only seed to fall in Hamburg today. Tommy Robredo lost to Ivan Navarro in straight sets, so, yeah, good luck winning anything for the rest of the year, Tommy. And Stanislas Wawrinka, also on his best surface, lost to Guillermo Garcia-Lopez 62 64. I’d care, but I don’t. Did I mention Pico won?

Friday the Thirteenth: Part Doubs

Posted by gauloises1 on June 6, 2009

So I guess some Spaniards did do well at Roland Garros this year …

Anabel Medina Garrigues and Virginia Ruano Pascal picked up the women’s doubles title, beating Victoria Azarenka and Elena Vesnina 61 61.

Love Vesnina’s headband and her cheeky grin. I also love that Azarenka plays so much doubles. Go girl.

Posted by gauloises1 on May 20, 2009

Shazza’s comeback continues apace as she took care of lucky loser Kustova 2 and 0. The tournament is now completely devoid of Radwanska/is as Dani defeated littler sis Urszula in straight sets.

Anne Keothavong had a good win, taking care of veteran Jill Craybas. And third and fifth seeds Zheng Jie Jie Zheng and Sara Errani were knocked out, so, you know, weirdness abounds.

Defending champion Anabel Medina Garrigues was forced to withdraw today with a back injury. From her player blog:

It was a disappointing day today. I was playing a point and hurt my back, and I had to retire from the match. I’ve had this problem before – twice last year. It’s painful and makes your back very stiff. The good news is it usually takes three or four days of treatment and it heals, so I will be fine for Roland Garros. I’ll have treatment on it until the day I play my first match there, of course.

It’s too bad this happened at one of my favorite tournaments. I’m always happy to come to Strasbourg, and I’ll be back next year of course. These things happen though. Hopefully it will be fine in a few days like it was the last time. I’m leaving for Paris tomorrow afternoon. I always love going back to Roland Garros.

Fourth-seeded Gisela Dulko also fell. But hey, Aravane Rezai’s still in!

Fes Results: Medina Garrigues Beats Makarova

Posted by gauloises1 on May 3, 2009

Anabel Medina Garrigues beats Ekaterina Makarova for the Fes title, 60 61. Who could have predicted that? Oh wait, everybody.

This is AMG’s ninth career title and her eighth on red clay.

It wasn’t all bad for Makarova, though; she and her partner Alisa Kleybanova beat Cirstea and Kirilenko for the doubles title.
