A New Low For British Tennis

Posted by gauloises1 on April 6, 2010

… almost ten minutes after we had the last one. I mean, first we lost to Lithuania. Then John Lloyd resigned as Davis Cup captain (hanging on just long enough to make financial arrangements) and almost immediately started calling out Andy Murray for not playing enough. Now the LTA’s manifold failings are the subject of an enquiry by MPs, and our players are criminals. Not even kidding.

Dan Evans, Davis Cup failure and the seventh ranked British player, is being questioned by police following an alleged sexual assault in Bath. Apparently the victim was talking to two men after leaving a nightclub on March 19th before she was pushed on to a discarded mattress and sexually assaulted. Avon and Somerset Police issued a photo of three men believed to have information, one of whom has been identified as Evans. The other two are also believed to be tennis players.

Evans is ‘fully co-operating’ and the LTA has declined to comment.

Yeah. Not funny.

D Cup: Go Lithuania!

Posted by gauloises1 on March 8, 2010

Remember when I said that Team GB were going to lose to Lithuania and the nation would be forced to kill ourselves from shame? Well, we did lose to Lithuania, 3-2.

That’s Ricardas Berankis. He beats Tims.

I’m too depressed to even go into this. I refer you to the Times for all your breast-beating/gloating needs, and will say just two things: 1) well done to the Lithuanians, who were really impressive the whole weekend and showed all the heart (there’s that word again) that British tennis lacks, and 2) is there any chance, even a tiny one, that right now plans are being hatched at LTA headquarters to lock Dan Evans in a room with a tennis racquet and expect him to do the honourable thing (i.e. beat himself to death)?

Now I feel bad. But not that bad.

Actually, that’s not fair to Dan Evans. OK, he came up short – again – this time against an opponent younger and far lower-ranked than him, who has yet to play an ATP match, and who has presumably enjoyed a fraction of the financial support and expert attention that has been lavished on Evans, but .,. why was I feeling sorry for him again?

Oh yeah. Failure on this grand a scale belongs to more than one individual. It isn’t Evans’, isn’t Ward’s, isn’t Murray’s for not playing (I still think he made exactly the right decision) and isn’t John Lloyd’s (who has to be feeling pretty nervous now that GB have lost five ties in a row). Something is rotten in Roehampton and unless the LTA makes drastic changes to the way that things are run (and the people they are run by), this will just keep on happening. I just wish I could believe that a loss this humiliating will change anything apart from the identity of the latest scapegoat.

And that’s all I have to say about that.

Great Britain now face a relegation play-off against Turkey in July.

D Cup: “We Are Where We Deserve To Be.”

Posted by gauloises1 on September 20, 2009

Failure this bad really deserves its own post. Great Britain lost to Poland, 3-2, a result which puts us into Group II of the Europe/Africa zone. That’s the same group as Hungary, Monaco, Lithuania, and Egypt, whose Davis Cup team is actually made up of mummies.

Not so much.

This really is beyond dismal. Credit to Andy Murray, who showed up injured and fatigued and did his bit, picking up the second of two points by polishing (ha!) off Jerzy Janowicz 63 64 63 to level the tie at 2-2.

But why – why – Dan Evans couldn’t even take a set off a player ranked 376 places beneath him is beyond my comprehension. The British no. 2 lost to Michal Przysiezny 62 61 75 in less than two hours, losing his serve no less than seven times.

From all accounts, the Pole raised his game significantly. But Evans must have played well below his, which is kind of the opposite of what’s supposed to happen in Davis Cup.

Murray has it right:

“I think now, at last, we are where we deserve to be. We clearly are not good enough to be playing against these teams,” Murray said. “With or without me, we are struggling to win matches.

“Everybody who’s involved – and I am one of them – needs to be honest about how we are doing and that we need to get better. This could be the best thing that happens.”

It’s a valid point. I mean, what’s going to happen? Unless something changes, we’ll get back up to Group I of the zone and then just lose all over again.

God. I wanted to rant about the patheticness of this, but I don’t even have the energy. You suck, Great Britain. We suck.

Brits R Balls: Bally Wins, Evans Is The New Murray

Posted by gauloises1 on April 27, 2009

Obligatory British tennis update …

Elena Baltacha picked up her first singles title of 2009 at the $25,000 event in Changwon, Korea, beating Japan’s Junri Namigata 6-3, 6-1 in the final. Good show, Bally.

And Acegroup, the company that Murray left for 19, has quickly signed the next big thing – or is it the next best thing? – Dan Evans.

Evans is the 18 year-old who was reprimanded by the LTA last year for attending a party the night after he lost in the boys’ doubles at Wimbledon. However, he’s since won two grass-court future events and a Challenger in Jersey, and is now no. 5 in the domestic rankings – and the highest-ranked 18 year old on the ATP tour. Acegroup must reckon he has some potential – or are they just desperate to replace Murray?
