USO Day Three: Au Revoir, Fabrice

Posted by gauloises1 on September 3, 2009

Marat wasn’t the only one who bowed out yesterday; Fabrice Santoro finished his final U.S. Open (except … wasn’t that last year as well?), losing to Juan Carlos Ferrero 64 63 63. And I do NOT like his new haircut.

Noooo! Grow it again!

Anyway, I’ve never been a huge fan of Santoro but I loved his presser, especiallythis quote:

At the moment, I pick up a racquet when I was six, almost seven. Thirty years later, I’m going to quit. During thirty years, every morning I was having my bag, put the shoes in the bag; your racquet; your strings; you go to practice; you’re going to play some tournaments; you travel; you win matches; you lose some. You go to the hotel and you travel again, and that was my life for thirty years.
Now I’m going to change, and I want to be home. I want to see my friends; I want to spend more time with my daughter; I want to live like normal life. But that’s the question: What is a normal life?

See ya, Fabrice.

Saturday Results: Budapest, Newport

Posted by gauloises1 on July 12, 2009

We have our finalists.

It’ll be fourth seed Agnes Szavay against top seed Patty Schnyder in the final of the Gaz de France, as the former took care of Alona Bondarenko 61 62. Patty had to do double duty, finishing off a rain-delayed match with Alisa Kleybanova that went to three hard-fought sets before returning to lay the smackdown on mad twatter Edina Gallovits. With all due respect to the whiteness of Patty’s mile, I’ll be rooting for Agnes tomorrow. Considering that earlier on this year – not so very long ago, really – we were all marvelling at how far she had fallen, she’s climbed out of a big hole quite impressively.

rajeev ram

Recognise this guy? No, me neither. Should I? This is Rajeev Ram, who beat Olivier Rochus 63 64 to advance to the finals of world ridiculousness championships, the Campbell’s Pepsi Ronson Cilit Bang championships. He’ll meet Sam Querrey, who beat defending champion Fabrice Santoro 63 76(2).

RG Day Three: Emperor Fabulous, Still Alive

Posted by gauloises1 on May 26, 2009

The matchus interruptus proved contagious, at least for Frenchies. My suicide pick Arnaud Clement called it a day at one set all with Dmitry Tursunov, and Febreeze Santoro thrilled the French crowds by taking a set off diminutive Belgian Christophe Rochus before play was suspended with Santoro serving at 3-5 down in the fourth set.

Emperor Fabulous lives. At least for one more game.
