Is This Thing On?

Posted by gauloises1 on May 5, 2010

Sorry for the long hiatus in posting. It was a bank holiday here in the UK and that means a lot of, well, not sitting in front of a computer. Then I was too depressed to blog. But I’m here, my sexual orientation is none of your business, and let’s have a look at what I missed over the weekend, shall we?

Rafa won the Rome Masters for the fifth time in six years. This is the sort of thing that happens. It’s his 17th Masters title, equalling Andre Agassi’s record. That sort of thing happens more rarely. And it’s Madrid next week, so who wants to take bets on how long that record is going to stand? Anyone?

Spare a thought for Ferru, though, who beat Andy Murray, Jo-Wilfried Tsonga (thanks to AmyLu for the reminder!) and Fernando Verdasco to reach the final, only to be soundly beaten … again.

Just go hang out with Boss, David. At least he buys you dinner when he beats you.

While we’re thought-sparing, how about Fernando Verdasco? He outlasted Djokovic in a three-set epic, only to run out of gas against Ferru – understandably, after his excellent showings in Monte-Carlo and Barcelona. Nobody’s going to want him anywhere near them in the draw in Madrid – or Paris.

The same (ish) goes for Ernests Gulbis, who backed up his win over Federer by reaching the semis and becoming the first player to break Rafa’s serve or take a set from him all week. Can we consider him tennistically resurrected?

Hope so.

Meanwhile in Stuttgart, other oddly familiar things were afoot.

Justine Henin beat Samantha Stosur for the first title of her comeback. I can’t quite figure out how I feel about Justine these days. But that’s by the by to a hearty well done. Going to give a shout-out though to Sam Stosur – she really can play on clay, if that Roland Garros semi-final didn’t clue you in already – and Anna Lapushchenkova, who qualified into the draw and beat Govortsova, Azarenka and Safarova on her way to the semi-finals. The jury’s out on whether she’s a thing, but I thought she played really well all week.

On the subject of people who might be things, the de-boobed Simona Halep reached the finals of Fes in only her third tour event.

She lost to Iveta Benesova, but still.

And that is what happened while I was on a bender. I think.

Stuttgart, Fes: Tuesday’s Results, Wednesday’s OOP

Posted by gauloises1 on April 27, 2010

I absolutely love Stuttgart. The draw is ridiculously loaded so you get great match-ups right from the start, and they have night sessions so I get to watch after work. It’s all good. Anyway, the first full day’s play already threw up some interesting results. Agnes Szavay outlasted Andrea Petkovic in a marathon night session, 75 in the third; after Petkovic found her range, she played with by far the greater energy and commitment, but fell at the final hurdle. It’s a tough loss after a tough Fed Cup weekend, especially at home, but Szavay did well to get herself together and will face Dinara Safina in the second round. Shahar Peer also battled against Polona Hercog, but all the seeds came through in straights, including Svetlana Kuznetsova against Katarina Srebotnik and Li Na against tough clay-courter Sara Errani.

Most people had their eyes on Agnieszka Radwanska against Ana Ivanovic, however, which ended pretty much the way you would expect.

Obligatory photo of Ana’s dress. You won’t be seeing it again in Stuttgart.

I hear that Ana played and particularly served a lot better than she has done in living memory, so. Onwards and upwards, as she herself would say.

Some interesting results in the criminally unphotographed Fes today; the top two seeds both dropped a set but came through, Medina Garrigues served up a double bagel, and unlikely winners Alize Cornet, Bojana Jovanovski and Simona Halep upset Petra Martic, Barbara Zahlalova Strycova and Lucie Hradecka respectively. Fed Cup and boob reductions. I’m just saying. And a pair of Tims won. C’mon!

Posted by gauloises1 on April 27, 2010

Very little actually happened today. In Stuttgart, the biggest occurrence was probably first-time doubles pairing Ana Ivanovic and Andrea Petkovic losing to veteran British doubles specialist Sarah Borwell and her partner Rachel Kops-Jones, while in Fes … er, really nothing. Fes Results: Medina Garrigues Beats Makarova

Posted by gauloises1 on May 3, 2009

Anabel Medina Garrigues beats Ekaterina Makarova for the Fes title, 60 61. Who could have predicted that? Oh wait, everybody.

This is AMG’s ninth career title and her eighth on red clay.

It wasn’t all bad for Makarova, though; she and her partner Alisa Kleybanova beat Cirstea and Kirilenko for the doubles title.

Kleybanova Blogs from Fes

Posted by gauloises1 on April 30, 2009

I just noticed Alisa Kleybanova is blogging from Fes this week.

My favourite bit? Responding to a question about her hobbies:

And I don’t do this as much now, but at home I used to like making things out of beads, and if anyone has noticed my bracelet, I made it myself 🙂

Uh-oh … she’s the crafty type!

I don’t know why this makes me like her, but it does.
