Image is Everything: D Cup Quarter-finals

Posted by gauloises1 on July 12, 2010

Because nothing generates quite so much fantastic photoage as Davis Cup. You know it to be true.

sorry but ive to say i fcking won davis cup!omg

Pretty sure I could snap him like a twig. A twig.

Marin’s left arm makes a desperate bid for freedom.

Get the man a Big Mac, a big drink and a big vuvuzela.

“Did I leave the gas on …?”

This is not the face I’ve missed.

This is the face I’ve missed.

Put it away, Nole. Or I will come to Serbia and show you where to … never mind.

“Mr. President. What the hell.”

Nothing beats a good old-fashioned Serbian love huddle.

Eduardo Schwank looking in no way ridiculous.

Eduardo Schwank being no way ridiculous.

Kind of impossible to dislike Gael when he finds himself on this planet long enough to win a big match.

Tipsy wants a cuddle. No-one on this earth can blame him.

They shoot horses, don’t they?

Premature celebrating.

Yeah, Youzh better run.

Having beaten Spain at tennis, France take them on at the art of the manly hug. And win.

Have him caramelised and sent to my room.

Nole Major and Nole Minor.

Look who showed up to ‘help’.

“I’m a little lamb who’s lost in the woods …”

Kolya contemplates the many tragedies of life.

Shamil contemplates finding another job.

You’re not helping.

Homoerotic celebrations: must try harder.

AO Day Two: The Upsets That Weren’t

Posted by gauloises1 on January 19, 2010

A tip of the hat to those who came close to rocking the boat … First up, Alize Cornet, who bagelled Francesca Schiavone before losing the second set 57 and being bagelled herself in the third.

Alicia Molik came very close to being this year’s Jelena Dokic, leading Julie Coin 63 41 before capitulating 62 in the third.

Fernando Verdasco dropped the first set to inspired fellow lefty Carsten Ball. I actually saw some of this and Ball was playing some great tennis. What, you thought I was going to make a pun? Would I?

Ballsed it up.

Samantha Stosur lived dangerously against Xinyun Han, dropping the second set before taking the third and the match, 62. What do you expect if you put the poor girl on Rod Laver?

But the “THIS close” award of the day has to go to Igor Andreev, who played (by all accounts) brilliantly to take a set off Federer, was a break up in the third and shipped three set points before losing in four.

Hopman Cup: Team Tim Win, Are Adorable

Posted by gauloises1 on January 4, 2010

First up in Hopman Cup yesterday, Team Russia edged a 2-1 victory over Germany – but Sabine Lisicki kicked off her 2010 in style with a 64 61 demolition of an out-of-sorts Elena Dementieva. Impressive stuff from Licky, but Igor Andreev randomly decided to become relevant again and beat Philipp Kohlschreiber in three before the Russians took the doubles 64 76(7).

The night session was Tim o’clock, and Laura Robson acquitted herself well for two sets against Yaroslava Shvedova of Kazakhstan before falling 46 63 60.

Luckily for Laura, big brother was on hand to rescue the situation, demolishing Andrey Golubev 62 62.

After sorting out some important colour co-ordination issues, it was time for the mixed doubles and much to the surprise of many, Team GB won it 63 57 76(10). I haven’t had a chance to watch all the highlights yet, but from what I’ve seen, they were good – a little lucky, but good. And more importantly, adorable.

Love them.

Dementieva, Andreev To Play Hopman Cup

Posted by gauloises1 on August 26, 2009

Elena Dementieva and Igor Andreev have been confirmed as Russia’s team for the 2010 Hopman Cup.

demmy hc

igor hc

Can’t wait to see these two play doubles with each other. Oh wait. Yes I can.

They join Lleyton Hewitt and Sam Stosur as the only confirmed teams so far.

Gstaad: Bellucci! Beck!

Posted by gauloises1 on August 1, 2009

Well, one out of two Brazilians isn’t bad. Andi Beck did the business on Marcos Daniel (boo!) but nose job stayed strong and notched up a good win over Andreev.

igor idiotic

I got nothing on this one.

nose job on his back

The Eurosport website described him as “unfancied”, which I thought was rather cruel.

nose job fierce

I fancy him rotten.

Singles – Semi-finals
[Q] T Bellucci (BRA) d [3] I Andreev (RUS) 64 75
A Beck (GER) d M Daniel (BRA) 76(3) 63

Doubles – Semi-finals

Dmitry Tursunov is out! Igor “dying of consumption” Kunitsyn is in!

Why does this look like the cast of a truly terrible sitcom?

Wimbledon Day Seven: Don't Haas-sle the Hair

Posted by gauloises1 on June 29, 2009

In a Halle-final rematch, Novak Djokovic will face Tommy Haas in the quarter-finals.

And this time you’d better win, kitten-hair.

Nole knocked out Dudi Sela in possibly the most straightforward match of the day, and Haas took care of Igor Andreev.

It’s not the racquet, Igor.

And can we take a moment to salute Dudi Sela, one of the most quietly impressive stories of the tournament?

Get down with your bad self.

RG Day Seven: Juan Martin del Potro Through

Posted by gauloises1 on May 30, 2009

Blogging advisory: I sliced my finger open with a breadknife earlier in a fit of French Open distraction while making lunch, so blogging may be even lighter on words than usual …

But who cares when the pictures are of this man?

He defeated Igor Andreev in straight sets, 64 75 64. My man is now 5-0 against Andreev. It was a tighter match that I thought it would be, actually, given Igor’s previous marathon matches. But Elf was relentlessly aggressive and attacked the net consistently and effectively (which makes me go tingly all over).

igor elf

So into the R16 he goes. That’s the good news. The bad news is, he’ll play Tsonga …

In other bad news for Argy-lovers, Maximo G just lost to Tommy Robredo in four sets. Boo.

RG Day Five: ATP Round-Up

Posted by gauloises1 on May 29, 2009

So Jo-Wilfried Tsonga and Jeremy Chardy weren’t the only Frenchies to go through today. Paul-Henri Mathieu defeated Pablo Andujar and Marc Gicquel beat Andreas Beck to book his place in the third round:

La Monf also made it through, beating Victor Crivoi 4-3-3 and most importantly, conserving energy and ensuring he did no more damage to his somewhat battered body:

Kolya finished his match against Diego Junqueira in style and Andy Roddick matched his best French Open finish yet by advancing to the third round over Ivo Minar. And while three Argies (Pico, Junq in the Trunq and Leonardo Mayer) fell, two more advanced – Maximo Gonzalez beating Andrea Seppi, and most importantly, THIS GUY:

Straight sets over Tricky Vicky, can I get a HELL YEAH?

Also through: Christophe Rochus, Tommy Haas, Jurgen Melzer, and Igor Andreev and Tommy Robredo …

… and probably some other people I’ve forgotten due to the sheer ridiculousness of those pictures.
