USO Day Six: Say What?

Posted by gauloises1 on September 6, 2009

A few quotes I liked from yesterday’s pressers.

Lleyton Hewitt predicts a great future for Roger Federer …

When he is able to play the way he wants to play and dictate terms, he’s going to be very tough to beat.

Also, what’s a ‘smokey’?

Q. What do you think about Del Potro?
LLEYTON HEWITT: He’s a smokey. I like the guy a lot, great game. Great head on his shoulders and he competes extremely well. I don’t know where he is in the draw, who…

Q. Murray.
LLEYTON HEWITT: Murray section?
Yeah, it will be a tough one. Obviously they played in the final in Montreal and Murray just got him there. I think Murray has had the edge over him a little bit in the past, but Del Potro, if the draw opens up, he can definitely make a run.

Ask Andy Roddick a stupid question …

Q. What do you think the very young Andy Roddick would think of Roddick and the career he’s had?

ANDY RODDICK: He’d probably take it.

Q. Pretty good ride?

ANDY RODDICK: I’d hope so. If I got critiqued by a 10‑year‑old for my career, I’d be pretty pissed off.

Sorry, what happened, Novak?

Q. Have you ever had a serve where your racquet landed on the other side of the court?
NOVAK DJOKOVIC:
Yeah, I’ve had this year I think it was Indian Wells was something similar.

Q. What happens there, Novak?
NOVAK DJOKOVIC:
Because of the sweat, you know. I get the sweat a lot, my hand. Then I always try to use some liquids to stop the sweating, and then I sweat and just I didn’t squeeze the racquet. You know, you have to make when you want to make it faster, obviously you have to pop it with the wrist really fast, and then I just dropped the racquet. It was embarrassing.
Because I didn’t know exactly I thought that the point will repeat because he missed his shot.

Q. It went out, right?
NOVAK DJOKOVIC:
Yeah, but the rule, as the chair umpire said, was that I lose a point, so… Then I had four great serves after that. It helped me.

Q. Seemed like it kind of got you focused or something.
NOVAK DJOKOVIC:
Indeed.

Jesse Witten is down to earth:

Q. Was there like a best perk of playing in this tournament for you that you’re going to miss, you know, back on the challengers?
JESSE WITTEN:
The new laundry every day.

Andy Roddick is the wind beneath John Isner‘s wings:

Q. Did Andy’s conditioning, all that loss of weight in any way inspire your own dedication to your career?

JOHN ISNER: Well, it’s not only that. I think just Andy in general pushes every American player because he’s the guy that we all look up to. I’ll still continue to look up to him. He sets the bar real high. He’s 5 in the world. Nobody’s even close to him in America.

He’s really the guy that all of us kind of aspire to be and try to be better than him, if that’s possible.

Maria Sharapova is shocked, shocked she says.

Q. After Melanie beat Jelena Jankovic in Wimbledon, Jelena Jankovic said she doesn’t have many weapons and she wasn’t too impressed.
MARIA SHARAPOVA:
Shocking. Shocking that she said that.

Q. What are your thoughts about Oudin’s game?
MARIA SHARAPOVA:
I thought she played really well. I thought she has many weapons. You know, she certainly held her ground. I mean, you know, I still feel like I had my chances, even though it wasn’t my best day.
You know, when you let those chances go, it’s just frustrating. But, I mean, got to hand it to her. She really stuck to her game plan. She played solid. She made me hit a lot of balls. She moved really well around the court, yeah.

And ….

Q. How do you think her serve will hold up when she gets up against some other tough returners?
MARIA SHARAPOVA:
Are you saying I’m not a good returner?

And finally, never play Scrabble with Melanie Oudin:

Q. Can you talk about your competitive spirit?
MELANIE OUDIN:
I’ve always been so competitive, doesn’t matter what I’m doing. Whether I’m playing tennis, playing cards, playing some kind of like board game, I always want to win more than anything. I’m not going to give up, you know, no matter what the score is. I’m down 6 0, 5 0, you know, I’m not going to give up. I’m going to keep fighting.

USO Day Six: WTF?!

Posted by gauloises1 on September 6, 2009

So I took yesterday off from tennis (and indeed blogging) to indulge in some top-flight rugby at Twickenham. Only to return to some very, very confusing things.

WTF #1: Federer drops a set to Hewitt. What?

fed

WTF #2: Nole drops a set to Jesse Witten. What?

nolewitten

WTF #3: Melanie Oudin beats Maria Sharapova. Wow.

oudin

WTF #4: Dinara Safina loses to Petra Kvitova. Really?

kvitova

WTF #5: Andy Roddick loses to John Isner. ……….. Wow. What does linz think about this?!

isner

Anyone out there who saw some or all of these ker-azy things occurring and wants to shed some light on what the fuck they think happened?

Have to say though, huge congratulations to Petra Kvitova, Melanie Oudin and John Isner on their wins. You don’t beat Safina, Sharapova and Roddick without playing great and competing really hard. Kudos.

USO Day Two: Upsetastic

Posted by gauloises1 on September 2, 2009

A bit of seed spillage and general surprises going on today. Possibly the biggest, for sheer obscurity of the upsetter and perceived reliability of the upsettee? Probably Jesse Witten, a 26 year-old ranked 276, beating twenty-ninth seed Igor Andreev – who took Federer to five sets here last year, let us not forget – in straight sets, 64 60 62.

witten

This is seriously Jesse Witten. WTF.

Also representing for the home nation was Kevin Kim, who took out Dudi Sela in four, and Taylor Dent, who beat Feliciano Lopez in four dramatic sets that were frankly great fun to watch.

dent

Scary, scary man.

Seed-wise, we also lost Ivo Karlovic, the twenty-seventh seed, who fell to Ivan Navarro in straight sets, and Stanislas Wawrinka was NOT the man. The nineteenth seed dropped to Nico Lapentti, who came back from two sets to love down to take the match 63 in the fifth. But I’m rather fond of Nico, so that’s OK.

nico

Both Karlovic and Wawrinka were in Murray’s quarter, so allow me a quiet ‘yay’, please.

On the WTA side, twenty-seventh seed Kleybanova fell to Petra Kvitova in three, and sixteenth seed Virginie Razzano was shown the door by NB fave Yanina Wickmayer, who is finally beginning to deliver on some of her promise.

And in a pulsating three-set encounter, Kateryna Bondarenko put out Ana Ivanovic. I have never seen Ana fight so desperately to win a match. Kudos to K-Bond, though, who started off dreadfully and battled fatigue and injury to take the third-set tiebreaker and with it the match.
