Sunday Titlists 2: 2008/Never Again For Youzhny and Bacsinszky

Posted by gauloises1 on October 25, 2009

Mikhail Youzhny’s last ATP singles title was in 2008 in Chennai. I don’t even remember that. But he’s back to winning ways, beating maiden ATP finalist Janko Tipsarevic 67(5) 60 64 for the Kremlin Cup. It’s the sixth straight year that it’s been won by a Russian. At this point I will try not to say anything about British tennis.

And the fourth final ended with a first-time winner, Timea Bacsinszky, who defeated Sabine Lisicki 62 75 for the Luxembourg title.

Obviously I was rooting for Licky, but I thought Bacsinszky played a very solid match. She backed up her great performance against Wickmayer in convincing style and completely outplayed an out-of-sorts Lisicki. Well done.

Sadly, Lisicki’s loss means she won’t qualify for Bali (that other year-ending championships), with Aravane Rezai taking the final spot. Hopefully she’ll knock up a fetching number for the occasion.

Sunday Titlists: 2007 Again For Baggy and Schiavone

Posted by gauloises1 on October 25, 2009

At least it was for two of today’s finalists, Francesca Schiavone and Marcos Baghdatis, who both won their first singles title since 2007.

Baggy won 61 75 over Olivier Rochus, who admitted he was tired after playing back-to-back three setters to reach the final. It’s really good to see Baggy back in the winner’s circle on the tour; looks like dropping down to Challenger level for a while paid dividends.

Also turning back the years was Francesca Schiavone, who defeated Olga Govortsova 63 60 for the WTA Kremlin Cup.

Amazing face.

Francesca’s last title came in Bad Gastein in 2007, and before today she was 1-10 in finals. Plus she’s adorable. It’s all good.

Sunday’s Finals Set

Posted by gauloises1 on October 24, 2009

Busy day of semi-finals today and at the end of all things we have four finals set for tomorrow.

francesca schiavone kremlin cup moscow

olga govortsova kremlin cup moscow

How about that Olga Govortsova? Under the radar, she’s been having an incredible tournament, taking out Martinez Sanchez, Dushevina and now Alisa Kleybanova 62 61 to make her first final of the year. She’ll face Francesca Schiavone, who beat Alona Bondarenko to make her third final of the year. The Italian will be heavily favoured to win, so expect a crushing Govortsova victory.

janko tipsarevic kremlin cup moscow

mikhail youzhny kremlin cup moscow

Tipsy vs. Mischa on the men’s side, as they beat a pair of qualifiers easily to make the final. Good opportunity for Youzhny to pick up his first title of the year (may not be true, but I can’t face tackling the ATP website to check).

olivier rochus stockholm open

Another great win for Olivier Rochus. The pocket-sized Belgian beat Thomaz Bellucci 63 in the third to reach the final, where he’ll meet Marcos Baghdatis after Robin Soderling was forced to withdraw with the same elbow injury he’s been struggling with ever since Wimbledon or thereabouts.

robin soderling stockholm open

Sad face. Get well soon, Robin.

Luxembourg offered a pair of high-quality three-setters in the semis, but at the end Timea Bacszinsky and Sabine Lisicki defeated Yanina Wickmayer and Shahar Peer respectively to make the final.

Licky gets two pictures because she’s pretty and I *really* want her to win tomorrow.

Auf gehts.

One Out of Two Not Bad, Belgium

Posted by gauloises1 on October 23, 2009

Sadly I can find no photos of Luxembourg yet, but stuff happened! Oh yes. Much to the surprise of everyone, Patty Schnyder beat Mumbacker Kim Clijsters in a third set tiebreak. Nicely done, Patty. She was 2-6 down to Clijsters in the H2H before today. Luckily for the fans, they still have Yanina Wickmayer, who withstood a determined challenge from Alize Cornet and her own allergy to holding serve for a 75 76(6) win. Shahar Peer and Katarina Srebotnik also progressed.

As aforementioned, the surprise of the day in Moscow was Vera Zvonareva falling to Tsetvana Pironkova. In what has become a familiar tale in 2009, Zvonareva was clearly struggling with her knees, but all credit to Pironkova, who played really exceptionally well. It’s a struggle to reconcile a performance like that with 13 first-round losses this year, but there you are.

tsvetana pironkova kremlin cup moscow

It’s not all woe for the Russians though, as a trio of unseeded ladies are through; Alisa Kleybanova, Vera Dushevina and Maria Kirilenko, who did well to beat Aleksandra Wozniak 64 63.

maria kirilenko kremlin cup moscow

And as also aforementioned, JJ is also through after beating Lucie Safarova 76(5) 63. Lucie looked very good in patches, but as usual, a plethora of unforced errors at inopportune moments cost her against the much steadier JJ.

Robin Rocks, Marat Mastered by Mini-Me

Posted by gauloises1 on October 23, 2009

You know what? I’m getting quite fed up with all the Soderling hate floating around. Can we pretend his existence isn’t defined by his history against that Spanish guy and take a moment to appreciate Robin Soderling? Not only is he a legitimate excuse to look at pictures of Magnus Norman …

magnus norman

… but he’s the only seed left in the entirety of the Stockholm Open. And he gives good photo.

Go on. Hate that ass. I dare you.

Anyway, Soderling beat Seppi 61 63 to join Olivier Rochus, Baggy, Arnaud Clement and Jarkko Nieminen (who got a walkover from Tommy Haas due to the flu) in the quarterfinals. Good stuff.

In Moscow, it was a pretty good day for the people who aren’t really anybody, particularly. Robby Ginepri beat Marcel Granollers and even bagelled him in the second, qualifiers Kukushkin and Marchenko defeated Odesnik and Golubev respectively, Christophe Rochus was forced to retire trailing Janko Tipsarevic, and Marat Safin failed to do the decent thing and consolidate his defeat of Davydenko, falling to Evgeny Korolev.

JJ Backs Into Doha

Posted by gauloises1 on October 23, 2009

So the race to Doha has been run, and Jelena Jankovic will get the final spot in the eight-woman tournament after Vera Zvonareva lost to qualifier Tsvetana Pironkova, ending her chance to qualify for the YEC.

Zvonareva will now take the first alternate spot, with Agnieszka Radwanska as second alternate.

Oh and JJ won her match, too, just to make it official.
