OK, Stop It Now, Kuala Lumpur

Posted by gauloises1 on September 30, 2009

Seriously, pretty much every photo that comes out of the Proton Malaysian Open (or whatever) is just cracking me up. I mean, this is how they have chosen to sum up Kolya’s 63 76(4) win over Taylor Dent:

Is it me or does Kolya look like he’s just about to nail the photographer? (With the ball, is what I mean. Obviously.) Anyway, he won. And so did a number of other people, including Gasquet, Soderling, and Youzhny.

Taking his time to make it into the winner’s circle was Gael Monfils, who beat Istomin 76(3) 76(2) and told a harrowing tale of planes, trains and automobiles. He did not, however, address the minor issue of what he’s done to his hair.

la monfla monf2

Is it me, or does he instantly look about five years younger and not in a good way?

Bangkok can’t compete, anyway, it was boring today. Horseface and Nose Job lost. That is all the news of interest.

Don’t Look Now, But I Think There’s a Metaphor Behind You

Posted by gauloises1 on September 29, 2009

Some of the photos coming out of the Proton Malaysia Open or whatever it’s called are really cracking me up.

To wit:

This is how you make top tennis players feel inadequate.

Unless they’re Verdasco.

Bangkok, Kuala Lumpur: We Have a Pimback On Our Hands

Posted by gauloises1 on September 29, 2009

Now everybody’s bloody doing it. Joachim Johansson played his first ATP tour-level match for nearly a year and he only went and knocked out eighth seed Lleyton Hewitt in straight sets. Madness. Other nuttiness included Feliciano Lopez falling to Martin Vassallo Arguello of Argentina in a result that made me all warm and fuzzy inside, and David Ferrer losing to Mikhail Youzhny. Youzhny attributed his victory to being used to the conditions. Hmmm. Maybe Ferru just wanted to get the hell out of there before they could make him wear one of those shirts. Oh, and Berdych won.

In Bangkok, more madness as the boy(s) least likely to actually won a match …

… but Marcos Daniel lost. Boo to you, Jurgen Melzer.

Image is Everything: Introducing Jonathan Ross’ New House Band

Posted by gauloises1 on September 29, 2009

I am literally *crying* with laughter right now.

kuala lumpur

It’s the way ‘Nando’ has his tucked in that makes it art.

Excuse me. I need to go lie down in a darkened room and laugh it out for a bit. I hear it’s good for the abs.

Bangkok, Kuala Lumpur: Baggy, Isner Survive

Posted by gauloises1 on September 29, 2009

Not too much happened today on the men’s side. In Bangkok, Nose Job had a nice straight sets win over Guillermo Garcia-Lopez and John Isner survived a tough challenge from Kittipong Wachiramanowong a.k.a Smelly Cat. Oh, and Marat and Gilles won in doubles.

In Kuala Lumpur, Taylor Dent and Marcos Baghdatis both had tough three set matches but survived. Great stuff.

Posted by gauloises1 on September 28, 2009

I just have to make my peace with the fact that with the Asian swing, I’m (a) not going to see any of it and (b) will always feel like I’m blogging at least a day behind. (I am.)

ATP Week Ahead: Bangkok, Kuala Lumpur

Posted by gauloises1 on September 28, 2009

jo bangkokjo bangkok trophy

Siam is gonna be the witness to the ultimate test of tennistical fitness. Draw here.

Last year’s finalist Novak Djokovic is not back, but this is still fun. Defending champ Tsonga, Gilles, Querrey and Troicki are the top four seeds with byes into the second round. Gulbis against Somdev Devvarman in the first round immediately catches the eye, with the winner meeting Tsonga in the second, with Marat Safin and Philipp Petzchner also in that quarter and playing each other in the first round. Nose Job is in Viktor’s quarter, facing occasional giant-killer and Armada supply vessel Guillermo Garcia-Lopez in the first, while John Isner meets the winner of Mischa Zverev and a certain HORSEFAAAAAAAACE!!! in the second. Sam has a nice draw, while Brazilian sexpot Marcos Daniel will be attempting to derail Jurgen Melzer in the first round, and it isn’t inconceivable that Gilles could meet Fabrice Santoro a.k.a. Emperor Fabulous in the quarters at the bottom of the draw. Great fun.

France Kuala Lumpur

kuala lumpur

I image-google’d Kuala Lumpur. This came up.

This is the first year for this tournament and the draw is not half bad; Gonzo and Nando for pulling power, Soderling for evil, and Kolya to quietly and lethally win the whole thing. Also kicking about: Taylor Dent, Feliciano Lopez and Bambi all in Kolya’s quarter; Tomas Berdych, who had a good run in the east last year, in Soderling’s; Ferru, Baggy and Chucho in Gonzo’s quarter; and Richard Gasquet and not-apparently-quite-retired wildcard Joachim Johanssen playing Lleyton Hewitt at the bottom of the draw. Good stuff.
