Mammoth Titlist … list

Posted by gauloises1 on July 19, 2010

I have to apologise for my protracted absence. Life stuff in the first half of the week followed by sustaining a silly and very painful eye injury on Wednesday which required me to lie in the dark being very bored … Well, that’s my excuse.

So who’s been winning while I’ve been away?

Bastad – ATP

Almagro continued his quest for universal popularity by beating Robin Soderling 75 36 62 for his sixth career title and first since Acapulco in 2009.

Bastad – WTA

Aravane Rezai beat Gisela Dulko 63 46 64 for her fourth career title and second this year. She’s now 4-0 in finals.

Agnes Szavay defended her title, beating last year’s whipping woman Patty Schnyder 62 64.

While everyone else was playing Davis Cup last weekend, Mardy Fish won the soup thing.

Quarterfinalist at Wimbledon and now defeater of Flavia Pennetta on home clay, Kaia Kanepi, ladies and gentlemen.

Second title in one post two weeks for Agnes Szavay, this time over Stepanova wedding guest Zahlalova Strycova, and she seems to have just about found her feet on clay for 2010. Never accused of good timing, our Agnes.

A fifth career title for Montanes, conqueror of Federer earlier this year in Estoril, didn’t quite come the way he would have wanted after Gael Monfils turned his ankle at the end of the first set and was forced to retire 1-2 down in the second. Get better soon, Gael. Incidentally, five career titles and he doesn’t even get a look in on Davis Cup? Sometimes I wish I was Spanish.

ATP Week Now: Newport Soup Tournament

Posted by gauloises1 on July 6, 2010

Draw here.

Top Seeds: Sam Querrey, Santiago Giraldo, Alejandro Falla, Olivier Rochus, Mardy Fish, Karol Beck, Rajeev Ram, Taylor Dent

The tournament has also given Nicolas Mahut a wildcard and, presumably, all the soup he can eat, which is a bit of a weird present to give to someone who just played the longest match ever. I’m saying, he’s probably had enough of tennis for a while. Why not a nice fruit basket? Or just a hearty ‘well done’?

It’s also worth noting that the Davis Cup quarterfinals are this weekend. I shall attempt to address them forthwith (i.e. tomorrow).

Who’s Already Out

Singles – First Round
[4] O Rochus (BEL) d E Roger-Vasselin (FRA) 76(2) 64
[WC] R Harrison (USA) d [6] K Beck (SVK) 61 62
G Soeda (JPN) d [8] T Dent (USA) 64 36 64
D Brown (JAM) d B Phau (GER) 76(3) 67(7) 64
F Dancevic (CAN) d M Gicquel (FRA) 75 64

Sunday Titlists: Budapest, Newport

Posted by gauloises1 on July 12, 2009

I really short-changed these tournaments on the bloggage front. Ah well.

szavay trophy

The redemption of Agnes Szavay continues as she beat Patty Schnyder 26 64 62 for her first title of 2009. Nice for her to do it at her home tournament, too.

ram newport

For some reason, I really expected the trophy to look like a can of soup.

Anyway, give it up for Rajeev Ram, the lucky loser who took Mardy Fish’s withdrawal from the tournament (after his D Cup call-up) and rode it all the way to the title, beating Sam Querrey 67(3) 75 63.

He’s also in the doubles final. Bloody hell, that’s some good zombie-ing.

Saturday Results: Budapest, Newport

Posted by gauloises1 on July 12, 2009

We have our finalists.

It’ll be fourth seed Agnes Szavay against top seed Patty Schnyder in the final of the Gaz de France, as the former took care of Alona Bondarenko 61 62. Patty had to do double duty, finishing off a rain-delayed match with Alisa Kleybanova that went to three hard-fought sets before returning to lay the smackdown on mad twatter Edina Gallovits. With all due respect to the whiteness of Patty’s mile, I’ll be rooting for Agnes tomorrow. Considering that earlier on this year – not so very long ago, really – we were all marvelling at how far she had fallen, she’s climbed out of a big hole quite impressively.

rajeev ram

Recognise this guy? No, me neither. Should I? This is Rajeev Ram, who beat Olivier Rochus 63 64 to advance to the finals of world ridiculousness championships, the Campbell’s Pepsi Ronson Cilit Bang championships. He’ll meet Sam Querrey, who beat defending champion Fabrice Santoro 63 76(2).

See you, Emperor Fabulous.

Monday Results: Bstaad, Budapest, Newport

Posted by gauloises1 on July 7, 2009

It. Never. Stops. Seriously.

But as you know, here at YFB we feel *all* tennis is important. (What idiot came up with that philosophy?!). Sorry for the lack of a preview. I barely know my own name at this point.

wozniacki berta

In Bstaad, all eyes are on Caroline Wozniacki. Who didn’t play today. But I’ll tell you who did! Sorana Cirstea, Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova, Carla Suarez Navarro, and Gisela Dulko are all through to the second round. Actually, that’s not a bad field. Not by half.

And any tournament which features Gisela and Flavia playing doubles is pretty much fine with me.

In Budapest, Alona Bondarenko beat Karolina Sprem. Doesn’t *everybody* beat Karolina Sprem these days? And in Newport, bewilderingly popular Taylor Dent, Daniel Brands and Samuel Groth all progressed, along with some other people.

Yes, I’m hanging on to my grasp of current tennis events by my fingernails. Thanks for noticing. Full results below.
